As Norway mourns the passing of King Harald V, his son Haakon VIII ascends the throne, pledging to uphold the royal family's motto.

Norwegians are grieving the death of the beloved King Harald V, as a period of national mourning begins and his son Haakon VIII assumes the throne.

King Harald V, who served as Norway's monarch for 35 years, passed away at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness related to a rare blood condition. His death was announced early on Friday, prompting an outpouring of grief from the public. Crowds quickly gathered at the royal palace in Oslo, many laying flowers and flags in tribute to the late king, with some mourners visibly in tears as they reflected on his legacy.

The new king, Haakon VIII, aged 53, held an extraordinary council of state meeting with government ministers shortly after his father’s passing. In a poignant moment, he embraced the royal family's motto, "All for Norway," indicating his commitment to continue the values upheld by his father during his reign.

King Harald V died in a hospital at 06:35 local time (04:35 GMT) after being treated for his medical condition. Following his death, his coffin was transported to the royal palace in a public procession that drew an estimated 10,000 people lining the streets of Oslo, a testament to the late monarch's popularity and the deep affection held for him by the Norwegian people.

Harald V was often referred to as the "people's king," a title that reflects his inclusive and empathetic approach to the monarchy. He was known for modernizing the Norwegian royal family, making it more accessible and relatable to the public. Throughout his reign, he engaged with citizens from all walks of life, promoting unity and understanding within the diverse Norwegian society.

His passing has prompted tributes from across Europe, including heartfelt messages from other royals and political leaders. King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whose mother Queen Elizabeth II was Harald's second cousin, expressed his condolences, highlighting the stability and service that King Harald provided to Norway during his long reign. Political leaders, including Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, also paid their respects, with Støre laying flowers outside the palace and signing a book of condolences. He remarked that the nation was "united in grief and gratitude," emphasizing the profound impact Harald had on the country.

In a televised memorial address, Støre noted that the late king's "legacy lives on" and extended condolences to the royal family, particularly to Queen Sonja, who would have celebrated her 58th wedding anniversary with Harald on the Saturday following his death. The couple's long-lasting partnership was emblematic of their shared commitment to the Norwegian people.

Norwegian football superstar Erling Haaland also expressed his gratitude, thanking Harald for "everything you meant to Norway" in a heartfelt post on Instagram. Haaland shared his honor at having met the king earlier in the summer at the palace following the FIFA Cup, showcasing how the late monarch connected with individuals from various fields, including sports.

As the nation mourns, many Norwegians are sharing their personal stories of how King Harald's reign affected their lives. Biteya Terfassa, an Oslo resident originally from Ethiopia, reflected on the king's impact, stating, "He made us feel at home and he made us feel loved. So he was like a grandfather that I never had." This sentiment resonates with many, highlighting the king's ability to foster a sense of belonging among immigrants and diverse communities in Norway.

In a ceremonial gesture of respect, the Norwegian Armed Forces honored King Harald with a 21-gun salute from Akershus Fortress in central Oslo at noon. Later that day, a solemn procession departed from the chapel at Rikshospitalet, where Harald had died, transporting his coffin to the royal palace for public viewing.

The date of Harald's funeral has yet to be officially announced, but in the interim, he will lie in state at the palace chapel, allowing the public to pay their last respects. During this national mourning period, flags will be flown at half-mast throughout Norway, and various memorial activities will take place, including the lighting of candles and moments of silence at professional events. In a display of respect, all non-work-related social events have been canceled or postponed, reflecting the collective sorrow felt across the nation. Notably, Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe postponed her wedding, which was scheduled for Friday, as a mark of respect for the late king.

As King Haakon VIII ascends to the throne, he is set to take an oath before the Norwegian parliament on Tuesday, marking the formal beginning of his reign. Following this, he will participate in a consecration service, which, while a simplified version of a traditional coronation, will symbolize the continuity of the monarchy and the values that King Harald V instilled during his time as king. The transition of power comes at a poignant moment for the Norwegian royal family and the nation, as they navigate the loss of a beloved monarch while looking forward to the future under a new king.
