The Gathering, launched in 2013 to boost Irish tourism, has officially ended after failing to sustain its momentum and plans for future events.

The Gathering, a government-backed initiative aimed at revitalizing Irish tourism following the financial crash, has officially concluded after a decade. Launched in 2013, the project sought to attract the Irish diaspora back to their homeland, encouraging those with Irish roots living abroad to reconnect with their heritage and experience the culture of Ireland firsthand.

Despite its ambitious goals, the initiative had been dormant since its inception. Fáilte Ireland, the national tourism agency, maintained the company in case it was needed again, but recent developments have led to its winding down. In March, the board of Fáilte Ireland agreed to dissolve the company that had been set up to manage The Gathering. This decision came after a decade of inactivity, with the most recent financial accounts indicating that the project had not been operational since 2013.

Origins and Objectives

The Gathering was conceived during the Global Irish Economic Forum in 2011, aimed at restoring Ireland's reputation and boosting its economy post-2008 financial crisis. The initiative was designed to encourage those with Irish roots living abroad to visit the country. The Irish economy had been severely impacted by the global financial crisis, which led to high unemployment rates and a significant decline in tourism. The government recognized the potential economic benefits of reconnecting with the diaspora, who could contribute not only through tourism but also by fostering business ties and investment in Ireland.

In 2012, the government established a subsidiary of Fáilte Ireland to oversee the project, setting a target of attracting 325,000 visitors in 2013. The initiative received significant funding, including €5 million in 2012 and €7 million in the 2013 budget. These financial resources were intended to promote events and activities that would appeal to the Irish diaspora and encourage them to visit Ireland, thereby infusing much-needed revenue into the struggling economy.

Event Highlights

In 2013, The Gathering featured over 2,800 events nationwide, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and diverse offerings of Ireland. Notable events included a special St. Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin that allowed 8,000 tourists to participate, and the Rose of Tralee festival, which invited 5,000 former contestants to Kerry for a unique gathering. These events were designed not only to attract visitors but also to foster a sense of community and connection among those with Irish heritage.

According to reports, the initiative successfully drew between 250,000 and 275,000 tourists, generating an estimated €170 million in revenue. This influx of visitors provided a much-needed boost to local economies and highlighted the importance of the diaspora as a target market for Irish tourism. However, it faced criticism from figures like Ryanair's Michael O’Leary, who suggested it was a ploy to exploit American tourists. Such criticisms raised questions about the sustainability and ethical implications of tourism initiatives that seek to capitalize on cultural heritage.

Future Prospects

Although there were discussions about replicating The Gathering every five years, these plans never materialized. The potential for a recurring event was seen as a way to maintain momentum and continue engaging the Irish diaspora, but logistical challenges and funding concerns ultimately hindered these efforts. Fáilte Ireland continued to file annual accounts for the dormant company, indicating its potential for future initiatives and the possibility of reviving similar projects if the circumstances allowed.

In 2024, a spokesperson for Fáilte Ireland stated that the company was being maintained in case it was needed for similar events in the future. However, a recent report confirmed that the Board of the National Tourism Development Authority decided to close the company in March 2026 and will apply for strike-off from the Companies Registration Office. This decision marks a definitive end to The Gathering initiative, reflecting the challenges of sustaining long-term tourism campaigns in a rapidly changing economic landscape.

The end of The Gathering marks a significant moment in Ireland's tourism history, reflecting both the challenges and successes of efforts to engage the Irish diaspora. It serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between promoting tourism and ensuring that such initiatives are sustainable and beneficial for both visitors and local communities. As Ireland looks towards the future, the lessons learned from The Gathering will likely inform new strategies aimed at revitalizing tourism and fostering connections with the global Irish community.
