Sophia Bendz discusses the thriving startup scene in Sweden, highlighting its recent successes and the cultural shift towards entrepreneurship.
New Delhi, India Aug 28, 2026 ALN: Sweden is perhaps one of the worldâs hottest tech hubs right now. It has long been home to Spotify and Klarna, but this latest wave of companies â from legal AI startup Legora to vibe-coding tool company Lovable â has left everyone wondering whatâs going on in one of the worldâs happiest countries.
Sophia Bendz, a general partner at Cherry Ventures, stopped by Equity to break down the latest in Stockholmâs startup ecosystem. Her answer for why the country has produced so many buzzy startups: Being a founder is actually cool. When she worked at Spotify years ago, the cool thing was to become a banker or go into consulting. âNow, I think a lot of people optimize for creating stuff and optimizing for both sort of freedom and probably wealth.â
This year, the startup ecosystem has raised $2.8 billion in funding, according to Dealroom, and is projected to hit at least $5 billion. Last year, the ecosystem raised $3.2 billion. Nothing has quite matched the $8.5 billion raised in 2021 â a reflection of the hot venture market that later cooled and is now, per the data, starting to heat back up again. Other big emerging names from the ecosystem include Neko Health and autonomous freight company Einride.
Bendz said that the latest wave of startups in Stockholm is benefiting from the first generation of entrepreneurs, who are providing resources and mentorship to the latest generation â or, in some cases, becoming repeat founders themselves (Spotify founder Daniel Ek, for instance, is also the founder of Neko Health).
âI think we also see a lot of people now kind of leaving Lovable because they also see these opportunities for companies that can be built with that technology,â she said about how this generation could inspire the next. âPeople that have worked at Lovable and Legora seem to be very entrepreneurial-driven and keen to start their own companies.â
Unsurprisingly, American investors have taken note. Bendz said more and more American investors have been flying in to meet with founders and hand out term sheets. âItâs just a testament to that we have a lot of great building companies here,â she said. âItâs a sign that weâre doing something right.â
The rise of Sweden as a prominent startup ecosystem is not merely a recent phenomenon but rather the culmination of several years of strategic investments in technology and innovation. Sweden has been recognized for its strong emphasis on education, particularly in STEM fields, which has cultivated a highly skilled workforce. This focus on education has been complemented by a robust infrastructure that supports entrepreneurship, including access to accelerators, incubators, and co-working spaces that foster collaboration among startups.
Moreover, the cultural landscape in Sweden plays a significant role in shaping the startup ecosystem. The Swedish society values innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, which are increasingly becoming essential components in the development of new business models. This cultural inclination towards sustainability has led to a surge in green tech startups, as entrepreneurs are more inclined to address pressing environmental challenges through innovative solutions.
Investment in technology research and development has also been a priority for the Swedish government. Initiatives aimed at fostering innovation have included funding programs and grants that specifically target tech startups, which have helped to lower the barriers to entry for new entrepreneurs. The governmentâs proactive stance in supporting the startup ecosystem has created a favorable environment for both domestic and international investors.
The presence of established tech giants such as Spotify and Klarna has also had a ripple effect on the startup scene. These companies have not only created job opportunities but have also inspired a new generation of entrepreneurs who have either worked for these firms or been influenced by their success stories. The phenomenon of "entrepreneurial role models" is particularly potent in Sweden, where successful founders often mentor new startups, sharing invaluable insights and experiences that can significantly improve the chances of success for emerging companies.
In addition, the startup ecosystem benefits from a strong network of venture capitalists and angel investors who are increasingly willing to invest in early-stage companies. This influx of capital is essential for startups, as it allows them to scale quickly and innovate without the constant pressure of immediate profitability. The competitive landscape among investors has also resulted in more favorable terms for startups, which can encourage more entrepreneurs to take the leap into founding their own companies.
As the Swedish startup ecosystem continues to grow, there are also implications for the broader European market. Sweden's success may serve as a model for other countries looking to enhance their own tech landscapes. The lessons learned from Sweden's approach to fostering innovation, supporting entrepreneurs, and creating a conducive environment for investment can be shared and adapted to suit different contexts across Europe.
In conclusion, Sweden's emergence as a leading startup ecosystem in Europe is a multifaceted story that encompasses cultural, educational, and economic factors. The combination of a supportive government, a strong emphasis on innovation, and a vibrant network of entrepreneurs and investors has positioned Sweden as a beacon for tech startups. As the ecosystem continues to evolve, it will be interesting to observe how it influences the global tech landscape and inspires future generations of entrepreneurs both within Sweden and beyond.
