SoftBank has sold 4.5 crore shares of Lenskart for ₹2,888 crore, marking its second major exit since the eyewear retailer's listing.
New Delhi, India Aug 24, 2026 ALN: In a significant move reflecting the dynamic landscape of investment in the eyewear sector, global investment firm SoftBank has offloaded a substantial stake in Lenskart, an Indian eyewear retailer, for ₹2,888 crore. This transaction involved the sale of 4.50 crore shares through its holding entity, SoftBank Vision Fund (SVF) II Lightbulb (Cayman) Ltd, at an average price of ₹641.75 per share. Notably, this price represents a 3% discount compared to the stock's last closing price, indicative of the strategic decisions that investors often navigate in volatile markets.
This transaction marks SoftBank's second major partial exit from Lenskart following the company's public listing. Earlier in June, SoftBank had sold 5.65 crore shares in a block deal for ₹2,873.3 crore. Such moves are not uncommon for large institutional investors, who may look to realize gains while still maintaining a stake in a company they believe has significant growth potential. Following the June sale, SoftBank retained a 9.79% stake, equating to 17.14 crore shares in Lenskart as of June 30, 2026, demonstrating a continued interest in the company's future prospects.
In this latest sale, European financial giant Societe Generale emerged as the largest buyer, acquiring 1.1 crore shares. Other notable investors included Goldman Sachs, which secured 84.3 lakh shares through two separate entities, and Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund, which picked up 47.7 lakh shares. Additionally, HSBC Mutual Fund purchased 32.6 lakh shares, while various investors associated with US investment firm Vanguard collectively acquired 36.9 lakh shares. The involvement of such prominent financial institutions underscores the growing interest in Lenskart and reflects broader trends in the investment community regarding new-age tech companies.
The timing of this stake sale is particularly noteworthy, as it aligns with a bullish trajectory for Lenskart's stock. Following a muted debut on the stock exchanges in November, the company's shares have surged over 69% from an initial listing price of ₹390. Although the stock experienced a slight decline of 0.67% to close at ₹656.95 on the day of the sale, it has seen a remarkable increase of approximately 50% on a year-to-date basis. Such performance is often indicative of strong investor confidence and market sentiment towards the company's growth prospects.
In the context of this bullish performance, other institutional backers, including KKR, ABG Capital, Alpha Wave, TR Capital, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), have also taken the opportunity to reduce their stakes in Lenskart since the expiration of the lock-in period on May 8. This collective trend of stake reduction among institutional investors may reflect a strategic repositioning as they capitalize on the stock's upward momentum.
Lenskart's growth trajectory has been bolstered by its improved financial performance since its initial public offering (IPO). The company achieved its maiden full-year profitability in FY25, with its net profit more than doubling to ₹530 crore in FY26. Additionally, Lenskart reported a 32.3% increase in revenue, reaching ₹9,002.3 crore during the same period. Such financial milestones are critical indicators of a company's operational efficiency and market competitiveness.
In the first quarter of FY27, Lenskart's performance continued to impress, with its bottom line more than tripling year-over-year to ₹228.4 crore. Operating revenue also saw a significant jump, increasing by 43% year-over-year and 8% quarter-over-quarter to ₹2,714.2 crore. These numbers not only highlight Lenskart's robust business model but also its ability to adapt and thrive in a challenging economic environment.
As part of its growth strategy, Lenskart has announced a series of investments aimed at enhancing its international operations. This includes an investment of ₹10.6 crore in Singapore-based Baofeng Framekart Technology Ltd, a joint venture with its subsidiary Lenskart Solutions Pte Ltd. Furthermore, the company has allocated ₹20 crore towards expanding its step-down subsidiary, OWNDAYS, into the Republic of Korea, as well as establishing a new step-down subsidiary in China. Such strategic expansions are indicative of Lenskart's ambitions to solidify its presence in the global eyewear market.
However, not all news has been positive for Lenskart. Recently, the company reported a cyber incident that impacted a sub-vendor of its Singapore-based group company. Cybersecurity remains a critical concern for businesses, particularly in the tech sector, as incidents can have far-reaching implications for customer trust and operational integrity. Lenskart's management will need to address these challenges promptly to maintain investor confidence and protect its brand reputation.
In summary, SoftBank's recent stake sale in Lenskart amid a bullish market reflects strategic investment decisions within a rapidly evolving sector. The financial performance and growth strategies of Lenskart indicate a promising future, although external challenges such as cybersecurity incidents must be managed effectively. As the company continues to expand its international footprint and enhance its operational capabilities, it remains to be seen how these factors will influence investor sentiment and market dynamics in the coming months.
