Ola Electric launches the S1Z electric scooter, starting at Rs 79,999, with deliveries set to begin in December 2026.
New Delhi, India Aug 28, 2026 ALN: Ola Electric has officially launched its latest electric scooter, the S1Z, with a starting price of Rs 79,999. The company has opened bookings for the scooter, and deliveries are expected to commence in December 2026. This launch marks a significant step in Ola Electric's ongoing efforts to enhance its product lineup and cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in India.
Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Ola Electric, announced the launch on social media, stating, "As India's electrification ramps, today we’re setting a new benchmark for the industry. More than just a metal body with a fancy name." This statement emphasizes the company's commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle sector, a commitment that has been evident in its previous models as well as its strategic vision for the future of mobility in India.
The S1Z is available in two battery configurations: the 3.1 kWh variant priced at Rs 79,999, which offers an IDC range of 179 km, and the 5.1 kWh variant priced at Rs 99,999, boasting a claimed IDC range of 301 km. The range offered by these scooters positions them favorably in the market, as consumers increasingly seek vehicles that can accommodate longer commutes without the need for frequent recharging.
Both variants of the electric scooter feature Ola Electric's in-house developed 46-series LFP Bharat Cell and have a top speed of 70 kmph. The decision to develop battery technology in-house signifies a strategic shift towards self-reliance, which is crucial for the company in terms of both cost management and innovation. By controlling the production of critical components, Ola Electric aims to improve performance and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
Aggarwal further remarked, “The industry has always treated affordable scooters as stripped-down products: less range, less technology, more compromise. We’ve done the opposite.” This reflects the company's strategy to offer high-quality, affordable electric scooters that do not compromise on features or performance. This approach is particularly important in a market like India, where affordability and functionality are key factors influencing consumer decisions.
“We built the cell, motor, vehicle, software, every critical component in-house. And we’re passing that tech advantage to the Indian customer,” he added, highlighting the company's focus on in-house development. This comprehensive control over the manufacturing process allows Ola Electric to innovate rapidly and respond to market demands more effectively than competitors who may rely on third-party suppliers.
Deliveries for the 5.1 kWh variant are anticipated to begin in March 2027. This staggered delivery schedule allows the company to manage production and supply chain challenges effectively, which have been exacerbated by global disruptions in recent years. The previous pricing for Ola Electric's models included the S1Z at a starting price of Rs 59,999, while the S1Z+ was priced at Rs 64,999, indicating a strategic pricing adjustment as the company seeks to position its products more competitively.
This launch is part of Ola Electric's strategy to strengthen its position in India's electric two-wheeler market. The Indian government has been promoting electric mobility as part of its broader environmental goals, aiming to reduce pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. In this context, Ola Electric's introduction of the S1Z aligns with national objectives and positions the company as a key player in the transition to sustainable transportation.
Earlier this month, the company reported a consolidated loss of Rs 336 crore in Q1 FY27, a reduction from Rs 428 crore a year earlier and Rs 500 crore in the previous quarter. These figures indicate that while the company is still operating at a loss, it is making strides in improving its financial health, which is crucial for attracting further investment and sustaining operations.
Despite the losses, Ola Electric's market share has increased from 5.1% in Q4 FY26 to 8.4% in Q1 FY27, with auto revenue rising 72% quarter-on-quarter. This growth in market share reflects the increasing consumer acceptance of electric scooters and the effectiveness of Ola Electric's marketing and product strategies. As more consumers shift towards electric mobility, the company is well-positioned to capture a larger segment of this expanding market.
In summary, the launch of the S1Z scooter represents a pivotal moment for Ola Electric as it strives to redefine the electric scooter landscape in India. By focusing on technology, affordability, and performance, the company aims to attract a diverse customer base while contributing to the broader goal of sustainable transportation. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, the implications of this launch could have lasting effects on consumer preferences and the competitive dynamics within the industry.
