Football Plus Academy secured the U16 ASMITA Women’s Football League title with a narrow victory over Kingdom Stewards FC in Jalukie.

DIMAPUR, AUG 29: The U16 ASMITA Football League for Women 2026–27 was organized by the Peren District Football Association (PDFA) at the Turf Ground, Jalukie on Saturday. This event was held under the directive of the Football Association (NFA) in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Khelo India. The ASMITA initiative represents a significant step towards empowering young women in sports, particularly in football, which has traditionally been male-dominated in many regions of India.

The league aims to foster a culture of sports among young girls, encouraging participation in football and providing them with a platform to showcase their talent. The event in Jalukie has drawn attention not only for its competitive spirit but also for its role in promoting gender equality in sports. The participation of six teams in this edition highlights the growing interest in women’s football at the grassroots level, reflecting a broader trend across the country as initiatives aimed at increasing female representation in sports gain momentum.

In a thrilling final, Football Plus Academy Jalukie faced off against Kingdom Stewards FC Jalukie. The match was closely contested, but Football Plus Academy emerged victorious with a narrow 1–0 win, claiming the championship title. The intensity of the match underscored the dedication and skill of the young athletes involved, as both teams demonstrated exceptional talent and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

The league is part of the ASMITA (Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women through Action) program initiated by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. Its primary aim is to promote women’s football at the grassroots level, providing young girls with regular opportunities to compete, develop their skills, and gain valuable match experience. This initiative not only seeks to enhance the technical skills of the players but also aims to build their confidence and leadership abilities, crucial traits for their future endeavors both on and off the field.

The ASMITA program is particularly important in the context of India’s broader sports development strategy, which emphasizes inclusivity and equal opportunity in sports. By focusing on women’s football, the government is addressing the historical disparities in sports participation rates between genders. This initiative is aligned with global movements advocating for women's rights and empowerment through sports, recognizing the transformative power of athletic participation in fostering self-esteem, teamwork, and resilience among young women.

This edition in Jalukie featured six participating teams, with young footballers representing various regions. Beyond serving as a competitive platform, the league also acted as a selection trial for the State team, preparing for the upcoming Dr. Talimeren Ao Junior Girls’ National Football Championship 2026–27. This championship is scheduled to take place from September 10 to October 7 in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and Narainpur, Chhattisgarh. The national championship presents an invaluable opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a higher level, gain exposure to different playing styles, and further their development as footballers.

Officials and coaches from the NFA conducted the player selection process during the matches, identifying promising talent to strengthen the state squad for the national championship. This scouting process is critical, as it not only helps in building a competitive state team but also ensures that the best players are given the chance to represent their state on a national platform. The selection process is thorough, involving assessments of players' technical skills, tactical understanding, physical fitness, and mental toughness, all of which are essential attributes for success in competitive football.

The implications of this league extend beyond immediate competition outcomes. By investing in women’s football through initiatives like ASMITA, the NFA and other stakeholders are laying the groundwork for a more equitable sports landscape in India. The increased visibility of women’s football can inspire more girls to take up the sport, thereby creating a larger talent pool for future generations. Furthermore, success at the national level could lead to greater sponsorship opportunities and increased media coverage, which are vital for the sustainability of women’s sports.

In conclusion, the U16 ASMITA Football League for Women 2026–27 not only crowned a champion in Football Plus Academy but also served as a pivotal event in promoting women's football in India. As the players look ahead to the national championship, the experiences gained from this league will undoubtedly shape their journeys in sports, contributing to the ongoing effort to elevate women’s participation in athletics across the country. The hope is that these young athletes will not only excel in football but also become role models for future generations, continuing the cycle of empowerment through sports.
