The 2nd Mr Northeast Bodybuilding & Physique Championship will take place in Kohima on September 12, featuring athletes from all eight Northeastern states.

KOHIMA, AUG 29: Kohima is set to host the 2nd Mr Northeast Bodybuilding & Physique Championship 2026 at the Capital Cultural Hall on September 12. The championship is organized by the Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (NBBFA) under the aegis of the Indian Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (IBBFF) and the Northeast Bodybuilding Federation (NEBBF).

This announcement was made during a press conference held at D’Cafe, Jail Colony, Kohima. Pema WD Bhutia, President of the Northeast Bodybuilding Federation, emphasized the significance of this championship for the bodybuilding community in the region. He noted that it serves as a platform to unite athletes from across the Northeast, following the inaugural edition held in Sikkim. The event not only showcases the talents of local athletes but also fosters camaraderie among participants from different states, enhancing the sense of community and regional pride.

Bodybuilding has a rich history in the Northeast of India, where the sport has gained popularity in recent years. The region has produced several notable bodybuilders who have gone on to compete at national and international levels. The Mr Northeast Bodybuilding Championship is a crucial event that provides these athletes with a competitive platform to demonstrate their skills and dedication. The championship also aims to inspire younger generations to take up fitness and bodybuilding as a viable career option.

All eight Northeastern states are expected to participate, with around 70 athletes tentatively indicating their involvement. Bhutia mentioned that they anticipate between 60 and 80 athletes, with final numbers to be confirmed after the first week of September, as some states, including Assam and Manipur, are scheduled to conduct their selection trials. This indicates a high level of interest and commitment from athletes across the region, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for bodybuilding as a competitive sport.

The event will run from September 11 to 13, with athlete registration and weigh-ins on September 11, while the main championship will take place on September 12. The competition will feature three major divisions comprising nine categories. In the Men’s Bodybuilding division, there will be six weight categories: up to and including 55 kg, up to 60 kg, up to 65 kg, up to 70 kg, up to 75 kg, and 80 kg and above. The Men’s Sports Physique will have two height categories—up to 165 cm and over 165 cm—while the Women’s Model Physique will be an open category.

The structure of the competition reflects the diverse range of athletes and their varying body types, allowing for a fair and comprehensive evaluation of their physiques. The event will adhere to the federation's rules and will be supervised by authorized technical officials and judges. This ensures that the competition maintains a high standard of integrity and professionalism, which is vital for the athletes’ credibility and the sport's reputation.

Bhutia stated that experienced judges from across the eight Northeastern states, including international-level judges, have been invited to serve on the judging panel. They expect around 14 to 16 judges, with one or two judges likely to represent each state. Medals and trophies have already been arranged, while the prize money will be announced later. The inclusion of international judges highlights the championship’s commitment to maintaining high judging standards and provides local athletes with exposure to a broader perspective on bodybuilding.

Furthermore, Bhutia explained that this championship is a crucial stepping stone for athletes aspiring to compete at higher levels. Athletes typically progress from state-level championships to the Northeast championship before advancing to national competitions such as the Federation Cup, Mr India, Senior Nationals, and Junior Nationals, and eventually to international competitions. This progression is essential for the growth of athletes, as it allows them to gain experience and improve their skills in a competitive environment.

The estimated budget for conducting the championship is around Rs. 16 lakh, covering venue, production, hospitality, logistics, awards, manpower, promotion, and other operational requirements. The association acknowledged support from various organizations and individuals, including NV Printing Press, ANTA, D’Cafe, TT Stationaries, and Olive Spring, with hospitality support from 2K Hotel and The Heritage. Elyzian is the design partner, and media support has been extended by Akashvani Kohima, DD, and Post. This collaborative effort demonstrates the community's commitment to promoting bodybuilding and fitness in the region.

While the organizers are still seeking sponsors and partners to meet remaining requirements, they invite corporates, businesses, organizations, and individuals to associate with the event as partners. The involvement of local businesses not only aids in the successful execution of the championship but also strengthens community ties and promotes local entrepreneurship. Athlete registration will involve the applicable registration fee through the IBBFF as per the federation process. However, entry for the general public will be completely free, allowing the community, particularly young people and fitness enthusiasts, to witness this major regional bodybuilding championship without any entry barrier.

This approach to accessibility is particularly important in encouraging youth participation in fitness activities, as it allows them to engage with the sport without financial constraints. The championship is positioned not just as a competitive event but also as a celebration of fitness, health, and community spirit, aiming to inspire a healthier lifestyle among the population.
