In a meeting with AJK's new leadership, Nawaz Sharif emphasized urgent reforms in healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership convened on Sunday to address pressing issues in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), emphasizing the need for immediate reforms in healthcare, education, and infrastructure. This meeting included newly elected AJK Prime Minister Iftikhar Gilani and Speaker Tariq Farooq, who are both pivotal figures in the newly formed government.

During the discussions, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif highlighted the importance of resolving the challenges faced by the residents of AJK. A statement released by the party underscored their commitment to improving living conditions in the region, which has long been marked by socio-economic challenges, including limited access to quality healthcare and education, as well as inadequate infrastructure.

Nawaz Sharif presented a comprehensive “100-day reform plan” aimed at enhancing various sectors, including healthcare, education, sanitation, and infrastructure. This initiative is designed to modernize AJK and align its development with that of Punjab, as stated in a post on X. The plan reflects the PML-N’s broader strategy to ensure that the benefits of development are felt across all regions of Pakistan, particularly in areas that have historically been underserved.

The PML-N leadership expressed their intent to guide AJK towards a path of modernization and development, ensuring that the region benefits from similar advancements seen in Punjab. This approach is critical as AJK has been striving to overcome numerous developmental hurdles, including a lack of investment in public services and infrastructure. The PML-N's focus on infrastructure development is particularly significant given that many areas in AJK have faced issues with road connectivity, sanitation, and access to clean water, which are essential for improving the quality of life for residents.

In response, PM Gilani and Speaker Farooq expressed gratitude to the PML-N leadership for their confidence and support. They acknowledged the significance of this collaboration in addressing the needs of the people. The acknowledgment of the PML-N’s role in AJK governance is indicative of the party's influence and the expectations placed upon it by the newly elected leadership.

Additionally, Nawaz, PM Shehbaz, and CM Maryam extended their congratulations to the newly elected AJK leadership, wishing them success in their roles. This gesture signifies a united front among the PML-N leadership and the AJK government, which is crucial for effective governance and the implementation of the reform agenda.

The meeting follows the recent swearing-in of forty-six newly elected members of the AJK Legislative Assembly on August 24, marking the commencement of a new parliamentary term after the 2026 general elections. The PML-N emerged as the dominant force in this assembly, with Barrister Iftikhar Gillani taking office as the 17th prime minister of AJK. Meanwhile, Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was appointed as the leader of the opposition. The establishment of a new government comes at a time when AJK is at a crossroads, with opportunities for significant reform and development.

As the new government settles in, the focus remains on implementing the reform plan effectively to uplift the standards of living in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. This is particularly important given the region's unique geopolitical situation, as it is located in a disputed territory that has implications for both Pakistan and India. The socio-economic development of AJK is not only vital for its residents but also plays a role in the broader context of regional stability and peace.

The PML-N's commitment to reform in AJK could also have implications for the party's political fortunes in the future. Success in implementing the 100-day plan could bolster the party’s image and strengthen its support base in the region, especially if tangible improvements in living standards are realized. Conversely, any failure to deliver on these promises could lead to disillusionment among the electorate and provide an opportunity for opposition parties, such as the PPP, to capitalize on any shortcomings.

In conclusion, the PML-N’s 100-day reform plan represents a critical initiative aimed at addressing the pressing needs of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The collaboration between the newly elected AJK leadership and the PML-N is a significant development that could pave the way for much-needed reforms in various sectors. As the government embarks on this ambitious agenda, the eyes of both the local population and political analysts will be closely watching to see how effectively these plans are executed and whether they translate into real improvements for the people of AJK.
