Jonathan Pugliese alleges he was wrongfully terminated from Airbnb despite a strong performance review, prompting legal action against the company.

Jonathan Pugliese, a former manager at Airbnb, has initiated High Court proceedings against the home rental giant, alleging he was unlawfully dismissed without prior warning regarding his performance. Pugliese, who led the company's premium French support team in Ireland, described his termination as "unprofessional" and "disrespectful," claiming it violated Airbnb's own policies.

Since establishing its European, Middle East, and Africa headquarters in Dublin in 2016, Airbnb has grown to employ around 400 staff at its North Wall Quay location. The company's choice of Dublin as its base for operations in this region reflects the city's status as a hub for tech companies, bolstered by its favorable corporate tax environment and access to a skilled workforce. Pugliese filed his complaint against Airbnb Ireland Unlimited Company on July 29, seeking to have his employment reinstated and the dismissal deemed null and void. He also requested that Airbnb continue to pay his salary and bonuses while preventing the company from filling his position.

In addition to seeking reinstatement, Pugliese is pursuing damages for emotional suffering, breach of contract, and reputational harm. The legal framework surrounding employment in Ireland is designed to protect workers from unfair dismissal, emphasizing the necessity for employers to follow due process before terminating an employee. Judge Siobhán Stack granted him an interim injunction that temporarily barred Airbnb from hiring for his position. However, when the case was revisited on August 6, Judge Michael Twomey was informed that the matter had been settled, indicating that both parties may have reached an agreement outside of the court.

Pugliese has since updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect his departure from Airbnb. His affidavit sheds light on the company's operations in Dublin. He joined Airbnb on an indefinite contract starting August 25, 2025, after previous roles at Apple and Amazon. His position as Premium Support Delivery Manager for the French market came with a base salary of €90,000 and additional stock options. This compensation package is indicative of the competitive salaries offered in the tech sector, particularly for managerial positions that require specialized skills and experience.

Despite receiving a "very positive" performance review after passing his six-month probation period in February, Pugliese claims that he was never warned about any performance issues. His contract stipulated that termination required one month's notice, and summary dismissal was only permissible in cases of gross misconduct, which also included a right of appeal. This raises questions about the procedures followed by Airbnb in Pugliese's case, particularly given the company's stated commitment to transparency and fairness in its employment practices.

Pugliese managed several staff members but noted that Airbnb provided limited training. He relied heavily on his prior management experience from Amazon and Apple. He described his role as "challenging," particularly due to frequent changes in management, which can create instability within a team and impact overall performance. The lack of adequate training and support for new managers is a concern that has been raised in various sectors, as it can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications regarding expectations and performance standards.

On July 15, Pugliese attended a performance discussion where he was informed by a human resources manager that his employment would be terminated immediately due to unsatisfactory performance. He was shocked by this announcement, as no prior concerns had been raised, nor was he placed on a performance improvement plan. The absence of a performance improvement plan is particularly notable, as such plans are typically designed to give employees a chance to address and rectify any perceived deficiencies in their work.

Following the meeting, he received an email from a regional manager confirming his dismissal, citing ongoing unsatisfactory performance as the reason. Pugliese expressed disbelief at the allegations, stating that he had never been warned about any performance issues. This response highlights the potential disconnect between management's perceptions of performance and the employee's understanding of their work quality and contributions.

After his termination, he was offered a modest settlement, which he declined. Pugliese emphasized that he was completely taken by surprise by the dismissal, as he had never been informed that his performance was lacking. The offer of a settlement, while common in employment disputes, can sometimes be viewed as an attempt by companies to avoid prolonged legal battles, but it may not always be acceptable to employees who feel wronged.

He argued that Airbnb did not adhere to its own policies regarding employee termination, which typically involve issuing verbal warnings before dismissal. Pugliese characterized the manner of his termination as unprofessional and in violation of Airbnb's policies. This situation raises broader questions about corporate governance and the adherence to internal policies, especially in organizations that pride themselves on their culture and values.

He further contended that the reasons given for his dismissal lacked factual justification and were difficult to reconcile. Pugliese claims that Airbnb's actions constituted a breach of contract and were unlawful. The implications of such claims can extend beyond individual cases, as they can influence public perception of the company and its practices, particularly in the competitive tech industry.

Both Pugliese and Airbnb have declined to comment further on the case, leaving the details of the settlement and any potential changes in company policy or practice unaddressed. This case serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in employment relationships, particularly in high-stakes environments like tech companies, where performance expectations are often high and the consequences of perceived failures can be severe. As the legal landscape surrounding employment rights continues to evolve, cases like Pugliese's may have lasting implications for how companies manage their workforce and adhere to fair employment practices.
