The Jordanian Armed Forces successfully intercepted eight missiles, responding to threats following Iranian claims of attacking US military positions in Jordan.

AMMAN/TEHRAN: The Jordanian Armed Forces announced that its air defense systems intercepted eight missiles that penetrated the country's airspace. This incident highlights the increasing tensions in the region, particularly concerning Iran’s military activities and the ongoing geopolitical dynamics involving the United States and its allies.

The Jordanian News Agency quoted the official spokesperson for the Jordanian Armed Forces as saying that the army dealt with these attacks and successfully destroyed the missiles before they posed any threat to citizens or property. This swift action underscores the military's readiness and capability to respond to aerial threats, a critical aspect of Jordan's national defense strategy.

He explained that the interceptions were carried out based on precise operational assessments and stemmed from the national responsibility to protect Jordan's airspace and ensure the safety of its residents, in accordance with the established rules of engagement. The Jordanian military has been increasingly vigilant in recent years, particularly in light of the volatile security environment in the Middle East, which has been marked by conflicts in neighboring Syria and Iraq, as well as heightened tensions with Iran.

He added that the Jordanian Armed Forces, in all its formations, continue to perform their duties with the highest levels of readiness and professionalism and will take all necessary measures to protect Jordan, safeguard its sovereignty, and maintain its security and stability. This commitment is crucial for Jordan, a nation that has long been seen as a bastion of stability in a tumultuous region, and it underscores the importance of military preparedness in the face of external threats.

The statement came after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) said it launched attacks on US military positions in Jordan following a US attack on Larak Island. The IRGC, which is a key military and political force in Iran, has a history of engaging in asymmetric warfare and supporting proxy groups throughout the region. Their involvement in direct attacks against US forces marks a significant escalation in hostilities, reflecting the broader tensions between Iran and the United States.

In a statement shared by Iranian news agencies, the IRGC said the combined missile and drone operation, which it called “Punishment of the Aggressor,” hit the King Hussein and Al Azraq bases. These bases are crucial for US operations in the region and serve as logistical hubs for military actions against various threats, including ISIS and Iranian influence. The IRGC's claim of having successfully targeted these installations suggests a strategic shift in their approach, moving from indirect support of proxy forces to direct military engagement.

It said the strikes “destroyed the technical and repair infrastructure, as well as the enemy fighter deployment sites,” inflicting significant damage. This assertion, if verified, could have serious implications for US military operations in the region, potentially degrading their operational capabilities and forcing a reassessment of their strategic posture in the Middle East.

“Aggression and crimes will not solve the enemy’s desperation in attempting to weaken the Islamic Republic’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, and every attack will be met with even more devastating responses,” the statement said. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply transits, making it a focal point of geopolitical tensions. Iran has repeatedly threatened to block this strait in response to perceived aggressions, which raises the stakes for both Iranian and US military operations in the area.

US forces have bombed two rocket launchers of the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) on Iran’s Larak Island, an unnamed US official told Al Jazeera Arabic earlier. This preemptive strike by the United States illustrates its commitment to countering Iranian threats and protecting its interests in the region. The use of airstrikes against IRGC assets indicates a willingness to escalate military responses in order to deter further Iranian aggression.

The official said that Sunday’s attack came as the launchers were preparing to fire missiles carrying naval mines towards the Strait of Hormuz. The potential deployment of naval mines poses a significant threat to commercial shipping and military vessels, further complicating an already tense maritime security environment. Such actions could provoke a broader conflict, drawing in multiple regional and global powers.

US forces are closely monitoring the area and remain ready to protect the flow of vessels through the waterway, the official said. This vigilance is crucial as the Strait of Hormuz remains a strategic artery for global trade and energy supplies. The ongoing military engagements and the rhetoric exchanged between Iran and the United States suggest that the situation is likely to remain volatile, with the potential for further escalations in the future. As both sides continue to navigate this complex landscape, the implications of these military actions will reverberate throughout the region, influencing not only bilateral relations but also the broader geopolitical balance of power.
