Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority Disposes of Over 655,000 Cases in 2025

Srinagar, India Aug 31, 2026 ALN: The Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority (J&K LSA) has made significant strides in the judicial landscape of the Union Territory by disposing of a remarkable number of cases through National and Special Lok Adalats during the year 2025. This initiative is part of the Authority's ongoing commitment to provide speedy and accessible justice to litigants, addressing the backlog of cases that often plague the judicial system.

The details released by the J&K LSA indicate that four National Lok Adalats were conducted in March, May, September, and December of 2025, collectively resolving 655,754 cases. This figure includes both pre-litigation and post-litigation matters, reflecting the diverse nature of disputes that were addressed. The settlements reached during these sessions amounted to a substantial Rs 2,463,757,754, showcasing the financial implications of the resolutions achieved.

The March National Lok Adalat was particularly productive, resulting in the disposal of 188,422 cases, which comprised 18,886 pre-litigation and 169,536 post-litigation cases. The settlements from this session alone totaled Rs 59.04 crore. Following this, the May Lok Adalat saw 136,020 cases resolved, including 17,382 pre-litigation and 118,638 post-litigation matters, with a settlement value of Rs 60.28 crore.

September proved to be the most successful month for case disposal, with approximately 239,562 cases settled. Notably, the overwhelming majority of these cases—235,072—were pre-litigation, indicating a proactive approach to dispute resolution before they escalated to formal litigation. The settlement amount for this session reached about Rs 50.39 crore. The final National Lok Adalat of the year, held in December, also contributed significantly to the overall totals, disposing of 91,750 cases, including 18,538 pre-litigation and 73,212 post-litigation cases, with settlements amounting to Rs 76.66 crore.

In addition to the National Lok Adalats, the J&K LSA organized Special Lok Adalats throughout the year in January, February, April, June, October, and November, which collectively resolved 34,006 cases. The February Special Lok Adalat was particularly noteworthy, as it settled 30,713 cases, including 4,714 pre-litigation and 25,999 post-litigation matters, resulting in settlements totaling Rs 10.94 crore. Other months recorded varying numbers of case disposals, with January settling 1,200 cases and November concluding 1,082 cases. The remaining Special Lok Adalats in April, June, and October resolved smaller numbers of cases, but collectively contributed to the total amount of settlements, which reached several crores of rupees.

Beyond case disposal, the J&K LSA has also focused on enhancing victim compensation, legal assistance, and rehabilitation services. In 2025, the Authority dealt with 16 victim-compensation cases, disbursing Rs 42.37 lakh. This marks an increase from previous years, where 76 cases involving Rs 1.46 crore were addressed in 2023, and 81 cases involving Rs 1.81 crore in 2024. The increasing trend in victim compensation cases indicates a growing recognition of the need for support for victims within the legal framework.

The Authority's efforts in legal services during 2025 included identifying and assisting 126 victims, providing them with essential legal aid, counselling, and support in matters that required intervention. Under its rehabilitation initiatives, the J&K LSA provided counselling to 73 victims, vocational training to two, and safe-space or rescue-centre support to 51 individuals. Additionally, assistance was extended to six victims who had previously dropped out of school, highlighting the Authority's commitment to not only legal redress but also to the broader social rehabilitation of affected individuals.

To further its mission of improving access to justice, the J&K LSA intensified its awareness programs, particularly targeting remote areas of the Union Territory. In 2025, the Authority organized 130 awareness camps and conducted 80 programs in schools, educational institutions, and religious centers. These initiatives are crucial in promoting legal literacy among the populace, ensuring that individuals are informed of their rights and the legal resources available to them.

Moreover, the Authority utilized various media platforms to disseminate information, conducting four awareness programs through radio, television, and digital channels, alongside 28 special drives aimed at reaching a wider audience. These efforts are instrumental in bridging the gap between the legal system and the community, particularly in regions where access to legal services may be limited.

The comprehensive initiatives undertaken by the J&K Legal Services Authority reflect a strategic approach to addressing the legal needs of the community.
