Rescue Efforts Intensify as Death Toll Rises in Nepal-China Flood Disaster

Helicopters are lifting stranded individuals to safety, while rescuers are pulling survivors caked in mud from the disaster zone.

The catastrophic flash floods, which occurred after a glacier collapse, have left almost 2,500 people missing. The rescue efforts have included teams rappelling into severely damaged areas on the Chinese side of the border. Experts are on high alert for potential new flooding from a lake that formed in the Himalayas following the initial disaster.

Nepal's army has been deployed to assist in rescuing over 100 individuals believed trapped inside a tunnel at a hydropower plant in the worst-hit district. The situation is complicated by thick layers of mud covering the site.

According to state media, the area where travelers once passed through border control has been flattened to a muddy expanse. Rescue official Zou Mingqi described the scene as “nothing but debris.”

The latest reports indicate that 579 people have died in Nepal, while the death toll on the Chinese side has risen to seven. The number of unaccounted individuals in Nepal has nearly doubled to 1,924, with many missing persons being foreigners in the region for work or pilgrimage.

In Rasuwa district, Nepali army rescuers are working to assist over 100 individuals trapped in a tunnel associated with the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project. So far, they have managed to rescue 350 people from the tunnel.

Video footage shows rescuers helping individuals covered in mud, emphasizing the complexity of locating entry and exit points in the tunnel due to the extensive mud coverage. Nepal’s disaster-management authority reports that 3,253 people have been airlifted from the disaster area.

Support for the rescue efforts has poured in from neighboring countries, including financial assistance from Sri Lanka, which has contributed $1 million despite its own fiscal challenges.

Survivors have recounted harrowing experiences, with some describing the moment the ground shook and a “black storm” approached. Customs officer Karbir Gaire, who was at work when the floods hit, noted that the quick actions of those present likely saved lives.

Families around the world are anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones, with more than 500 foreigners reported missing. Among them are individuals who may have been on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a sacred site for many.

Indian spiritual guru Jaggi Vasudev has reported that 77 people associated with his foundation were at the immigration center in Gyirong when the flooding occurred. The uncertainty surrounding their fate adds to the distress of families hoping for news.
