Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays tribute to Norway's King Harald V, recalling their meeting and offering condolences to the royal family and the Norwegian people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed grief over the passing of Norway's King Harald V and offered condolences to the royal family and the people of Norway.

PM Modi recalled his meeting with King Harald V during his two-day visit to Norway in May. During this visit, PM Modi was conferred with Norway's top honour, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, by the Norwegian King. This visit underscored the strong diplomatic relations between India and Norway, highlighting collaboration in various sectors including climate change, technology, and trade.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of His Majesty King Harald V of the Kingdom of Norway. I fondly recall meeting His Majesty during my visit to Norway earlier this year and was deeply touched by his warmth and profound sense of service to his nation. My heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Norway," PM Modi posted on X.

Norway's King Harald V passed away at the age of 89 on Friday, as confirmed by the Royal House of Norway. His death marks a significant moment in Norway's history, as he was a beloved figure who played a vital role in modernizing the monarchy and connecting with the public.

The King passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 am (local time) on Friday, according to the Royal House of Norway. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes not only from Norway but also from leaders around the world, reflecting his influence and the respect he commanded internationally.

Under Norway's rules of succession, 53-year-old Crown Prince Haakon immediately succeeded to the throne and became the country's new king. His regnal name and motto have yet to be officially announced. Crown Prince Haakon's ascension marks a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy, with expectations that he will continue his father's legacy while bringing his own vision for the monarchy into the future.

Harald was admitted to the hospital on August 17. Previously, the Royal House had stated that he had received cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia in recent weeks, which caused fluid accumulation. During his hospitalization, he was treated with antibiotics for a bacterial infection in his blood, as reported by Xinhua News Agency. The health struggles of King Harald had been closely monitored by the public and the media, with many expressing concern for his well-being in the days leading up to his passing.

The Royal House indicated that Harald's health had deteriorated and his condition was "very serious." His passing comes after a long reign that began on January 17, 1991, when he ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Olav V. King Harald's reign was characterized by a commitment to public service and a deep connection with the Norwegian people, which he maintained through numerous public engagements and charitable initiatives.

Born on February 21, 1937, King Harald V was a member of the House of Glücksburg and had a rich personal history that intertwined with Norway's national identity. He was educated in Norway and abroad, including at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Oslo. His experiences abroad helped shape his views on governance and public service, which he applied throughout his reign.

King Harald was married to Queen Sonja, and together they had two children, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Martha Louise. The royal family has been a symbol of unity and continuity in Norway, and their personal stories resonate with many Norwegians. The King and Queen's commitment to various social causes, including education and health, has further solidified their place in the hearts of the Norwegian people.

In addition to his royal duties, King Harald was also an avid sports enthusiast and a sailor, having represented Norway in sailing competitions. His passion for sports and outdoor activities reflected the Norwegian values of nature and community engagement.

The implications of King Harald V's passing extend beyond Norway's borders, as he was a figure of stability and continuity in a rapidly changing world. His death may shift the dynamics of the Norwegian monarchy, as Crown Prince Haakon takes on the responsibilities of the throne amid evolving societal expectations and challenges. The new king will likely face the task of modernizing the monarchy further while honoring the traditions that have defined it.

As Norway enters this new era under King Haakon, the legacy of King Harald V will undoubtedly influence the direction of the monarchy. His commitment to service, public engagement, and national unity will serve as a guiding principle for the new king as he navigates the responsibilities and expectations that come with the crown.

In conclusion, King Harald V's passing is not only a significant loss for Norway but also for the international community that recognized his contributions to diplomacy, culture, and public service. As tributes continue to pour in, it is evident that his legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of many.
