Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announces plans to boost bilateral trade with Canada, discussing a free trade agreement and investment protection.
New Delhi, India Aug 28, 2026 ALN: India and Canada are on track to more than double bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in Toronto. This statement was made during her week-long visit to Canada and the U.S., which is set to conclude soon. The ambitious trade target underscores the growing economic relationship between the two countries, which have been working to enhance their bilateral ties across various sectors.
“Every country is now looking for predictability and trust. So you need countries to come together, be able to be sure that trade will continue smoothly. And we have identified market access in several areas,” Sitharaman stated during a discussion with her Canadian counterpart, Francois-Philippe Champagne. This emphasis on predictability and trust reflects a broader trend in international trade, where nations are increasingly seeking stable and reliable partnerships amid global economic uncertainties.
The two nations are also in talks regarding a free trade agreement (FTA) aimed at finalizing it by the end of 2026. The goal is to increase bilateral trade, which was recorded at $7.96 billion in the fiscal year 2025-26, to the ambitious target of $50 billion by 2030. This target was initially set during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Canada last year, marking a significant moment in the diplomatic relations between the two countries. The FTA discussions are expected to cover a range of sectors, including goods, services, and investments, and could potentially remove tariffs and other trade barriers that currently exist between the two nations.
Both economies view the proposed trade deal as a beacon of stability amid global uncertainties. “The world of 2026 is increased complexity and volatility that I see. I would say trust is the most sought-after commodity in the world,” Champagne remarked. He emphasized the complementary nature of the two countries, noting the interconnectedness of food security, energy security, economic security, and national security. This perspective highlights the strategic importance of the partnership, as both countries look to leverage their strengths to address common challenges and enhance their global competitiveness.
In addition to the trade agreement, India and Canada are exploring a financial investment protection agreement. Recent data indicates that foreign direct investment (FDI) from Canada to India has nearly doubled over the past four years. Canada was India's 16th-largest source of FDI in FY26, with cumulative investments amounting to $4.33 billion since April 2000. This increase in investment reflects growing confidence in the Indian market and the potential for Canadian businesses to capitalize on India's economic growth and development opportunities.
Furthermore, Canadian financial services company Fairfax is reportedly interested in acquiring a 60% stake in IDBI Bank, which is currently undergoing a strategic disinvestment process by the Indian government. This interest from a Canadian firm in a significant Indian banking institution underscores the potential for deeper financial collaboration between the two nations, as well as the attractiveness of India’s banking sector to foreign investors.
During the event, Sitharaman encouraged Canadian businesses to engage actively with the Indian government, assuring them that the government would take all possible measures to enhance the business environment in India. This commitment to improving the investment climate is crucial, as it demonstrates India's willingness to facilitate foreign investment and create a conducive atmosphere for international businesses.
In conclusion, the discussions between India and Canada reflect a strong commitment to strengthening economic ties, with both nations optimistic about achieving their trade target by 2030. The potential for increased trade and investment not only promises economic benefits for both countries but also serves to strengthen diplomatic relations and foster greater cooperation in addressing global challenges. As both nations navigate the complexities of the international landscape, their partnership may serve as a model for other countries seeking to enhance their economic collaboration in an increasingly interconnected world.
