Zerodha's profit growth has stalled as its core broking business struggles. This article explores the latest developments in the tech and startup sector.

Zerodha, a prominent brokerage firm in India, has recently reported stagnation in its profit growth, raising significant concerns about the sustainability of its core broking business model. In its latest annual report, founder Nithin Kamath revealed that the company's net profit for the fiscal year 2026 (FY26) barely increased, rising to Rs 4,283 crore from Rs 4,231 crore the previous year. This flat growth trajectory is alarming, especially as operating revenue also remained unchanged, indicating potential challenges ahead for the firm and its stakeholders.

Core Business Under Pressure

The stagnation in Zerodha's profit growth is closely tied to a notable decline in brokerage income, which fell by 10.7% year-on-year to Rs 2,738 crore. This decline is particularly concerning as brokerage income is a primary revenue source for brokerage firms. Notably, net transaction charges dropped to zero after exchanges withdrew rebates, further impacting Zerodha's revenue streams. This shift in the financial landscape has prompted Kamath to note that while interest income from margin funding has been helping to offset these declines, it raises concerns about the firm's long-term financial health. The reliance on interest income can be precarious, especially in volatile market conditions where trading volumes can fluctuate significantly.

Key Financial Highlights:

  • Brokerage income decreased significantly, contributing to overall revenue stagnation.
  • Interest income reached Rs 2,269 crore, nearly matching brokerage income, indicating a shift in revenue reliance.
  • The margin trading facility (MTF) launched in December 2024 has gained traction, contributing approximately 10% of revenue, but also raises concerns regarding risk exposure.

Concerns Over Margin Trading

Kamath has expressed discomfort regarding the MTF business, which allows clients to borrow funds for trading. He revealed that clients have borrowed around Rs 6,000 crore, which represents roughly a quarter of Zerodha's net worth. This level of borrowing could pose significant risks if market conditions were to change unfavorably, potentially leading to increased defaults and financial strain on the firm. Margin trading can amplify both gains and losses, and in a market downturn, the repercussions could be severe not only for clients but also for Zerodha itself.

Competitor Insights

In stark contrast to Zerodha's stagnation, competitor Groww has reported a significant revenue increase, closing FY26 with Rs 4,062 crore and a profit of Rs 1,826 crore. Their Q4 topline surged by 87.9%, showcasing a robust growth trajectory that Zerodha currently lacks. This disparity highlights the competitive pressures within the brokerage sector, as firms adapt to changing market conditions and investor preferences. Groww's success may be attributed to its focus on user-friendly technology and diversified financial products, which have resonated well with a younger demographic of investors.

IT Firms Adapt to Market Changes

In addition to Zerodha's challenges, the Indian IT sector is also undergoing significant transformations. Companies are increasingly turning to bundled deals to navigate the evolving landscape shaped by artificial intelligence (AI). For instance, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) recently announced a $1.4 billion deal with Porsche, which includes the acquisition of its IT arm, MHP. Such strategic partnerships and acquisitions are indicative of the broader trend within the industry to leverage technological advancements and enhance service offerings.

Market Dynamics:

  • HCLTech has acquired Guardian Life Insurance's India operations, coupled with a seven-year services contract, further indicating a trend towards consolidation and service expansion.
  • Wipro's acquisition of Mindsprint, along with an eight-year service agreement, highlights the competitive landscape as firms seek to bolster their market position.
  • Tech Mahindra and LTIMindtree are also engaging in similar strategic moves, further emphasizing the shift in focus towards integrated service delivery models.

Experts attribute these shifts in the IT sector to two main factors: the competitive pressure from China's export economy and the transformative impact of AI on investment strategies. As firms adapt to these pressures, they are compelled to innovate and refine their offerings, which may pose additional challenges for traditional brokerage firms like Zerodha.

SoftBank's Financial Maneuvering

Meanwhile, SoftBank Group is reportedly in discussions for a $10-20 billion bond offering to refinance its investment in OpenAI. This move comes as the company seeks to manage its financial commitments effectively amidst a rapidly evolving tech landscape. SoftBank's financial strategies reflect a broader trend among investment firms to reassess their portfolios and ensure sustainability in the face of market volatility.

Conclusion

As Zerodha navigates these challenges, the broader tech and startup landscape continues to evolve rapidly. The firm's ability to adapt to changing market dynamics will be crucial for its future growth. With increasing competition and shifting investor preferences, Zerodha must innovate and possibly diversify its offerings to maintain its market position. The coming years will be critical as the firm seeks to balance risk management with growth opportunities in an increasingly complex financial environment.
