That's the vision behind an Indian private rocket company that achieved its first orbital launch on Saturday.
Skyroot Aerospace, which recently became India's first space tech unicorn after reaching a valuation of $1.1 billion, launched Vikram-1 from the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) launch facility in Sriharikota, southern India. This significant milestone marks a pivotal moment in India's burgeoning private space sector.
The seven-storey rocket lifted off at 12:05 India time [06:35 GMT] and traveled 280 miles (450 km) to reach Low Earth Orbit in a 16-minute flight. This successful launch not only demonstrates the technical capabilities of Skyroot Aerospace but also highlights India's growing presence in the global space industry.
Skyroot is the first Indian private company to launch a rocket into orbit, making India only the third country, after the US and China, with a private company capable of orbital launches. This achievement underscores the rapid evolution of India's space capabilities, which have traditionally been dominated by ISRO, the state-run space agency.
"Vikram-1 Test Flight-1 has reached orbit... History is made," the company posted on X, marking a moment of pride for the entire nation. The successful launch of Vikram-1 is a testament to the hard work and innovation within the Indian private sector, which has been increasingly recognized for its potential to contribute to both domestic and international space endeavors.
The successful Vikram-1 launch brings Skyroot closer to its goal of offering what it calls a "cab service to space," where companies can hire a rocket to reach a unique location in orbit to place a satellite or visit a space station. This model aims to democratize access to space, making it more accessible for small satellite operators who often face long wait times when competing for launch slots on larger rockets.
The rocket is named after Vikram Sarabhai, who is regarded as the father of India's space program. Sarabhai's vision laid the foundation for India's space capabilities, and naming the rocket after him serves as a tribute to his contributions. The Vikram-1 is designed to be a small rocket with the capacity to carry payloads of up to 350 kg, according to Skyroot co-founder and CEO Pawan Kumar Chandana. This capacity positions it well within the growing market for small satellite launches.
Chandana noted that access to space remains a major bottleneck, with satellite operators often waiting for months or even years for a launch opportunity. Their venture aims to change that by offering dedicated missions for small payloads. Instead of sharing space on large rockets that fly on fixed schedules, customers can book a launch tailored to their satellite and its required orbitâmuch like taking a taxi instead of waiting for a train. This model not only enhances efficiency but also reduces costs for satellite operators.
"If you want to just go to a friend's house, you don't need a train; you book a cab, an Uber. What we are offering is a cab service to space, which can be used to ride to a unique location in orbit to place a satellite or visit a station," Chandana explained. This analogy effectively communicates the company's vision of simplifying and streamlining the satellite launch process.
Skyroot's model appears similar to that of Rocket Lab in the US, which provides small-lift launch vehicles. Rocket Lab has successfully carved out a niche in the small satellite launch market, and Skyroot aims to replicate that success in India and beyond. The Indian test launch mission, called AagmanâSanskrit for arrivalâhas placed six payloads into orbit. These include scientific instruments such as a robotic arm for removing space debris, an Earth observation camera, and satellites, including one from a German company.
Additionally, two symbolic payloads have generated buzz in India: a lotus made of lab-grown diamonds and a tiny gold rocket featuring micro-sculptures of three of India's renowned scientists. Each smaller than a grain of rice, the sculptures pay tribute to Nobel Prize-winning physicist C.V. Raman and aerospace engineer and former Indian president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, along with Sarabhai. This thoughtful inclusion of symbolic payloads reflects the company's commitment to honoring India's scientific heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern space technology.
Chandana explained, "We exist because of the Indian space program; we stand on the shoulders of our early visionaries, and this is our way of paying tribute to three great scientists who shaped India's space program." The diamond lotus, called Cosmic Bloom and developed by Cosmos Diamonds, is an artist's tribute to space and celebrates India's creativity. It is expected to remind us all of the line "like a diamond in the sky" from the popular nursery rhyme Twinkle, Twinkle.
Saturday's launch is the first of two test flights Skyroot plans to conduct this year before they launch commercially next year. This phased approach allows the company to refine its technology and operational processes while building confidence among potential customers and investors.
"We have the capacity to build one rocket every month at our factory in the southern city of Hyderabad," Chandana stated. This production capability positions Skyroot to meet the increasing demand for satellite launches as more companies seek to deploy their own satellites for various applications, including communications, Earth observation, and scientific research.
Skyroot was founded in 2018 when Chandana and Naga Bharath Daka, former colleagues at ISRO, decided to co-found the space-tech start-up to build rocket components for satellites. Their backgrounds in ISRO have equipped them with the technical expertise and industry insights necessary to navigate the complexities of the space sector. In 2020, India opened the space sector to private firms, allowing them to build rockets and satellites and utilize ISRO's launch facilities, aiming to increase the country's share in the global business market from 2% to 10% by 2030. This policy shift has catalyzed the growth of the private space industry in India, paving the way for innovative companies like Skyroot to emerge and thrive.
Since then, the Indian government reports that more than 400 space start-ups have been established in India, but Skyroot remains the most successful and the only unicorn in the sector. This distinction highlights the company's rapid ascent and the potential for further growth within the Indian space ecosystem. The company first made headlines in November 2022 when it launched India's first privately developed suborbital rocket, setting the stage for its recent success.
Saturday's launch comes at a time when India's space program has gained attention following ISRO's historic Moon, Mars, and solar missions in recent years. These missions have not only showcased India's technological prowess but have also inspired a new generation of scientists and engineers in the country. India plans to send astronauts into space next year, an orbiter to Venus by 2028, and build its own space station by 2035. These ambitious goals reflect India's commitment to becoming a key player in the global space arena.
Skyroot's cab service could also cater to ISRO's space programs, but Chandana estimates that "70-80% of our market would be the global economy." This global focus aligns with the increasing demand for satellite services wide, driven by the proliferation of satellite-based technologies and applications.
"These would include satellites supporting services that millions rely on every day, from agriculture and fisheries to disaster management, communications, connectivity, navigation, and national security. So, the economic opportunity is huge." The successful launch of Vikram-1 not only signifies a major step forward for Skyroot Aerospace but also positions India as an emerging hub for private space exploration and satellite deployment on the global stage.
