Meta is addressing growing privacy concerns surrounding its smart glasses with a new PR campaign and updated privacy settings amid venue restrictions.

Meta's PR Campaign for Smart Glasses

Meta's smart glasses, which integrate augmented reality features with social media capabilities, have faced significant backlash due to privacy concerns, prompting the company to initiate a public relations campaign aimed at calming consumer fears. This initiative comes in the wake of heightened scrutiny regarding the implications of wearable technology on personal privacy. As various event organizers and venues impose restrictions on the use of these glasses, Meta is working to regain public trust through transparency and enhanced privacy settings.

The small camera embedded in Meta's AI smart glasses has raised alarms among the public, especially in light of recent incidents where videos and photos captured by these glasses circulated on social media without the consent of those being recorded. This has sparked a broader conversation about the ethics of recording in public spaces and the potential for misuse of technology. Disturbingly, some clips feature content creators covertly filming women, which has led to a troubling trend that has sparked widespread concern about privacy violations and the objectification of individuals in public settings.

One notable incident involved a male content creator asking a woman in an Instagram video, "Are you a secret code? Because I'm trying to crack you." Such incidents have led to social media users dubbing Meta's product as "pervert glasses," further tarnishing its image and raising alarms about the potential for harassment. This negative perception has not only affected consumer sentiment but has also led to calls for stricter regulations surrounding the use of smart glasses in public spaces.

In response to this negative perception, Meta is taking proactive measures to address these concerns. The company has publicized new privacy settings and launched a PR blitz to clarify how these glasses operate. Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, shared an Instagram video explaining the functionality of the hands-free camera. He emphasized that the camera is designed to be noticeable, featuring a capture LED on the front that lights up when someone is taking photos or videos for their gallery. This design choice aims to ensure that bystanders are aware when they may be recorded, a critical aspect of addressing privacy concerns.

"We designed this camera to be noticed by the people around you, so in every pair of glasses we make, there's a capture LED on the front, and it lights up when someone's taking photos or videos for the gallery," Bosworth stated. He further elaborated that the camera does not have an off switch and will cease to function if someone attempts to cover or deactivate it, reinforcing the company's commitment to transparency in its technology.

Moreover, Bosworth mentioned that the company has been actively removing content and even entire accounts associated with individuals misusing the glasses. This is part of Meta's broader strategy to combat the negative narrative surrounding its products and to foster a safer environment for users and bystanders alike. Alex Himel, Meta's vice president of wearables, also sought to reassure the public through a post on Threads, explaining that the smart glasses will not allow recording if the camera's LED light is obstructed. This technical safeguard aims to provide users with a sense of security regarding their privacy.

"We're going to keep rolling out updates like this to make sure the capture LED can reliably alert bystanders when photos or videos are being captured for someone's gallery," Himel said. This ongoing commitment to improving user experience and addressing privacy concerns is crucial as Meta navigates the challenges associated with integrating advanced technology into everyday life.

Despite these efforts, reports indicate that Meta has struggled to catch all instances of misuse. The company has made significant strides in marketing its smart glasses as a must-have accessory, collaborating with celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Teyana Taylor, and even airing a star-studded during Super Bowl LX. However, the backlash surrounding privacy issues has overshadowed these marketing efforts, highlighting the complexities of consumer acceptance of new technologies.

As smart glasses become more prevalent, some event organizers are adopting a cautious approach to mitigate privacy risks. For instance, Burning Man has informed attendees of its 2026 festival that while smart glasses are permitted, consent must be obtained before filming anyone. This policy reflects a growing trend among event organizers to prioritize consent and privacy in an era where technology can easily blur the lines of personal boundaries.

Similarly, New York City's Basement nightclub has updated its no-photo-and-video policy to include smart eyewear, stating that anyone bringing smart glasses into the venue will be asked to leave and may face a permanent ban. This move underscores the evolving nature of social norms regarding privacy in nightlife settings and the need for establishments to adapt to new technologies.

Additionally, the DEFCON Hacking Conference organizers have prohibited smart glasses and similar devices from their event, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a secure environment, especially in contexts where privacy is paramount. These actions by event organizers reflect a broader societal recognition of the potential risks associated with wearable technology and the need for proactive measures to protect individuals' rights.

In his Instagram video, Bosworth urged users to be vigilant about the LED light that indicates when the cameras are recording. "Please remember," he added, "the light is there for everyone." This reminder serves as a critical point in fostering responsible usage of smart glasses and enhancing public awareness about the implications of such technology. As Meta continues to navigate the challenges posed by privacy concerns, the effectiveness of its PR campaign and the implementation of new privacy measures will be crucial in shaping the future of smart glasses and their acceptance in society.
