Chinese startup Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 model is generating buzz as it showcases advancements in AI technology, prompting reactions from industry leaders.

Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI released Kimi K3 on Thursday, a powerful new model that the startup claims is the largest open-weight AI system in the world.

Moonshot asserts that K3, while still trailing the most powerful proprietary models like Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, surpasses their second-tier systems, Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.5, on benchmarks including coding and agentic tasks.

Within a day, K3 topped Arena's frontend coding leaderboard, outpacing every leading US model, and secured third place on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index.

This release, strategically timed just ahead of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, signals that Chinese labs are closing the gap with their US counterparts.

It has also stirred AI-related markets: Moonshot, backed by Alibaba and Tencent, is valued at approximately $31.5 billion, a fraction of the trillion-dollar-plus valuations associated with Anthropic and OpenAI.

Here's what notable figures in tech and academia are saying about it.

David Sacks, Cochair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology

David Sacks, a venture capitalist and former AI czar under President Trump, expressed concern over the release. He noted that it marks the first time a Chinese model has taken the top spot for frontend coding, with Kimi K3 also performing well on other benchmarks.

Sacks criticized the US for potentially hindering its own progress by blocking new data centers and imposing state regulations. He warned that this approach could lead to the US losing the AI race, emphasizing the importance of "permissionless innovation" that allowed America to thrive in the internet age.

Vinod Khosla, Billionaire Founder of Khosla Ventures

In response to Sacks' comments, Khosla agreed and pointed out a larger issue: the immigration policies that deter talented individuals from coming to the US. He highlighted the tightening of immigration restrictions under the Trump administration, which has made it more difficult for skilled workers to obtain visas.

Aaron Levie, CEO of Box

Levie hailed the release as a "huge win" for companies leveraging AI. He noted that the performance of Kimi K3 is remarkable for an open model, and its third-place ranking on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index demonstrates its potential.

Levie argued that the availability of cheaper frontier-level intelligence would enable enterprises to automate workflows that were previously cost-prohibitive.

Ethan Mollick, Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania

Mollick offered a note of caution, stating that Kimi K3 had some shortcomings when he tested it on a complex statistical audit of his previous work. He identified errors in the model's approach and shared his critique, emphasizing the need for careful evaluation of AI outputs.

Jason Calacanis, Investor and Co-host of "All-In Podcast"

Calacanis remarked on the accelerating pace of AI advancements, suggesting that the field has progressed more in the last month than in the previous year. He predicted significant developments in open-source AI, particularly in robotics and life sciences, forecasting that 2026 could be the year of AGI.

Russ Salakhutdinov, Professor at Carnegie Mellon University

Salakhutdinov, who co-advised Moonshot's founder, celebrated the release as a significant achievement for the open-source community. He reminisced about his former student's journey and contributions to AI research.

Gary Marcus, AI Researcher and Professor Emeritus at NYU

Marcus had a blunt reaction, calling for congressional investigation into the AI industry's economics, particularly regarding capital expenditures projected for US cloud providers.

Gavin Baker, Chief Investment Officer at Atreides Management

Baker labeled the release of Kimi K3 an "inflection point" for AI, suggesting it poses challenges for closed AI startups while benefiting the broader industry.

Dean Ball, OpenAI's Head of Strategic Futures

Ball expressed surprise at the open-source nature of Kimi K3, noting the potential risks involved. He suggested that China's approach to open-source AI aligns with its political philosophy, potentially leading to a model where AI is viewed as a public good.

The release of Kimi K3 has sparked a wide range of reactions, highlighting the competitive landscape of AI development and the implications for the future of technology.
