The new app EasyDMG streamlines the installation process for Mac users, eliminating the need for the traditional drag-and-drop method.

One of the oddest things about macOS is the installation dance. Dealing with disk images, dragging and dropping—it's the main way of installing software from outside the Mac App Store, and it's annoying.

You download a DMG file, open it to mount a virtual disk, and drag the application from there to your Applications folder. Then, to keep things tidy, you need to unmount the virtual disk and delete the DMG file. It's … convoluted. To be fair, it was relatively streamlined back in 2001 when it became the main way to install applications on the then-new Mac OS X. But that was a quarter-century ago, and there has to be a better way by now.

This installation method has remained largely unchanged over the years, despite the evolution of both software and user expectations. As technology advances, users increasingly seek simplicity and efficiency in their digital experiences. The complexity of the DMG installation process can be particularly frustrating for those who are not as tech-savvy, leading to a gap between user needs and the tools available for software installation.

Developer Jeff Schumann agrees, so he built a tool that does all these steps for you: EasyDMG. This completely free app has an adorable hamster mascot and the slogan “Created out of spite.” It lets you double-click DMGs to install software, the way it always should have worked. This approach not only streamlines the process but also reflects a growing trend in software development where developers create solutions to common user pain points.

To get started, simply download and install it using the very same installation dance you're trying to avoid. (Ironic, sure, but hopefully this is the last time.) After that, you need to set EasyDMG as the default application for opening DMG files—there's a button right in the settings that will do this for you. This initial setup is a small investment of time that pays off significantly in terms of ease of use for future installations.

Once EasyDMG is set as the default application, the next time you need to install software from a DMG file, you'll see EasyDMG pop up instead of the virtual disk. A window with a progress bar will let you know how the process is going, from mounting the virtual disk to verifying the application to doing the actual installation. This transparency during the installation process helps users feel more in control and informed about what is happening on their devices.

By default, EasyDMG will automatically delete the DMG file for you, then open a Finder window revealing your new application in the Applications folder. You can double-click on it to open it from there. This feature not only saves time but also helps maintain a cleaner file system, addressing a common concern among users who may accumulate numerous DMG files over time.

EasyDMG doesn't run in the background—it doesn't have to. The application only launches when you open a DMG file, then politely closes itself after the installation is complete. This design choice aligns with the principle of minimalism in software design, ensuring that users are not burdened with unnecessary processes running on their systems. Moreover, the application doesn't have any telemetry; the only network request it makes is checking for updates. This commitment to user privacy is increasingly important in today’s digital landscape, where users are becoming more aware of how their data is used.

There are a few things you can tweak in the settings, which you can open by launching EasyDMG directly. First, you can stop EasyDMG from automatically deleting DMG files, which might be useful for users who prefer to keep the installation files for backup or future reference. Second, you can toggle whether the Finder opens after you install an application, allowing for customization based on individual preferences. You can also set EasyDMG to launch the app right after installing, which is potentially handy for those eager to start using their new software immediately.

Additionally, you can disable all warnings about apps from unidentified developers (you probably shouldn't do this). This feature may appeal to advanced users who are confident in their ability to assess the safety of the software they are installing. However, it also poses a risk, as it bypasses important security measures designed to protect users from malicious software. Furthermore, if you don't like progress bars, you can disable the window and simply get a notification when installation is complete. This level of customization allows users to tailor their experience to match their preferences and workflow.

That’s not a long list of options, sure, but a streamlined application like this doesn't need many. You can configure it to work the way you want once, then never look at the settings again. This simplicity is part of the appeal of EasyDMG; it allows users to focus on what matters most—the software they want to install—without getting bogged down by unnecessary complexity. In a world where software solutions often come with overwhelming features and settings, EasyDMG stands out as a refreshing alternative that prioritizes user experience.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, tools like EasyDMG highlight the importance of user-centric design in software development. Developers who recognize and address the pain points of their users are likely to find success in a market that increasingly values efficiency and ease of use. EasyDMG not only simplifies the installation process for macOS users but also serves as a reminder of the need for innovation in areas that may have been overlooked for too long.
