SEDEMAC Mechatronics achieved a remarkable 95.1% increase in net profit in Q1 FY27, driven by a 42.5% rise in operating revenue, despite challenges in raw material costs.

Deeptech company SEDEMAC Mechatronics has reported a remarkable net profit increase of 95.1%, amounting to ₹33.3 Cr in the first quarter (Q1) of the fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27), compared to ₹17.1 Cr in the same quarter last year. This notable surge in profit reflects SEDEMAC's robust operational strategy and its ability to navigate the challenges posed by the current economic landscape. Sequentially, the profit rose by 3.8% from ₹32.1 Cr, showcasing a consistent upward trajectory in the company's financial performance.

The profit surge was primarily supported by a significant operating revenue increase of 42.5%, totaling ₹309.8 Cr in Q1 FY27, compared to ₹217.4 Cr in Q1 FY26. This growth in revenue is indicative of SEDEMAC's expanding market reach and its successful product offerings. On a quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) basis, the revenue rose by 7.7% from ₹287.7 Cr in the previous quarter, further emphasizing the company's ability to maintain a strong sales momentum.

In addition to the operating revenue, SEDEMAC reported other income of ₹86 Lakh, bringing the company's total income for the quarter to ₹310.6 Cr. However, total expenses increased significantly, rising by 41.9% year-on-year and 9.3% QoQ to ₹269.3 Cr in Q1 FY27. This increase in expenses can be attributed to various factors, including rising raw material costs and the challenges associated with a tightening semiconductor supply chain, which has been a pressing issue for many companies in the technology and manufacturing sectors.

Despite the increase in expenses, SEDEMAC managed to improve its EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) by 30% year-on-year to ₹60 Cr in Q1 FY27. However, the EBITDA margin declined to 19.4% from 21.2% in the previous year. This decline in margin highlights the impact of increased costs on profitability, but the company remains optimistic about stabilizing or improving its EBITDA margin for the remainder of the fiscal year compared to Q1 FY27.

Segment Performance

In a detailed segment-wise breakdown, SEDEMAC reported that its mobility segment contributed ₹281 Cr to its operating revenue, reflecting a substantial 53.4% year-on-year increase. This growth is particularly noteworthy as it underscores the rising demand for advanced electronic control systems in the automotive sector, driven by the increasing adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as the push for greater fuel efficiency and emissions reductions.

Conversely, revenue from SEDEMAC's industrial solutions vertical experienced a decline, falling by 15.7% year-on-year to ₹28.7 Cr in Q1 FY27. This downturn may be indicative of broader trends in the industrial sector, where companies are facing challenges related to supply chain disruptions and fluctuating demand due to economic uncertainties.

On the operational front, SEDEMAC has cumulatively sold over 1.3 Cr electronic control units (ECUs) to vehicle and industrial OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) across India, the US, and Europe. This milestone reflects the company's strong market position and its ability to cater to a diverse range of clients, which include major automotive players such as Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, Mahindra Group, Ashok Leyland, and TVS Motor.

Founded in 2007 by a team that includes IIT Bombay professor Shashikanth Suryanarayana along with Pushkaraj Panse, Sharma, and Dixit, SEDEMAC specializes in the design and manufacture of components for vehicles, including engine control units and motor controllers. The company's focus on innovation and technology has positioned it as a key player in the deeptech sector, contributing to advancements in automotive technology and industrial automation.

In addition to its automotive solutions, SEDEMAC provides industrial automation and control solutions that encompass electronics, embedded systems, and energy-efficient motor control technologies for manufacturing and industrial applications. This diversified portfolio enables the company to mitigate risks associated with fluctuations in any single market segment, allowing it to maintain a balanced approach to growth.

Cost Breakdown for Q1

Analyzing the cost structure for Q1 FY27, the Cost Of Materials Consumed emerged as the largest expense category for SEDEMAC. Costs in this category rose by 40% to ₹200 Cr in Q1 FY27 compared to ₹143 Cr in the previous year. This significant increase can be attributed to the rising prices of raw materials, which have been affected by global supply chain disruptions and increased demand for electronic components.

The Employee Benefits Expense also saw an increase, with SEDEMAC allocating ₹24.2 Cr for employee welfare, including salaries and provident fund contributions, during the quarter. This represents a 22.2% increase from ₹19.8 Cr in Q1 FY26. Investing in employee welfare is crucial for SEDEMAC, as it aims to attract and retain top talent in a highly competitive industry.

Furthermore, Other Expenses experienced a substantial increase of nearly 62.3%, reaching ₹32.5 Cr in Q1 FY27 compared to ₹20 Cr in the year-ago quarter. This rise in other expenses may encompass various operational costs, including research and development, marketing, and administrative expenses, which are essential for sustaining the company's growth trajectory and innovation efforts.

Despite the positive financial results, shares of SEDEMAC closed 2.38% lower at ₹2,710.45 on the BSE. This decline in share price may reflect investor sentiments regarding the overall market conditions, as well as concerns about the company's ability to sustain its growth amidst rising costs and potential economic headwinds.

In conclusion, SEDEMAC's impressive Q1 performance highlights the company's strong position in the deeptech sector, driven by robust revenue growth and significant profit increases. However, the challenges posed by rising costs and supply chain issues remain critical factors for the company to navigate as it moves forward in the fiscal year. Stakeholders will be closely monitoring SEDEMAC's strategies to enhance operational efficiency and maintain profitability in the face of these challenges.
