Intelligence Secures $7.9 Million to Enhance AI Feedback with Design Arena

Intelligence, the company behind Design Arena, has raised $7.9 million to improve human feedback for AI models, now utilized by 5.3 million users globally.

As co-founder Grace Li recounts, her company began just weeks before graduation in 2025, with a group of college friends striving to make their AI game engine functional. While the models could create operational games, none were enjoyable, leading to the pivotal question: how can one determine if a game is fun?

Recognizing the necessity of human judgment, they brainstormed methods to obtain honest human feedback at scale. This innovation led to the creation of Design Arena, an AI tool now employed by 5.3 million users worldwide. It quickly became apparent that numerous AI companies sought scalable user feedback and were willing to invest in it.

“It was the missing bottleneck for a lot of these models to make improvements in the design space,” Li states. “About a week later, we closed our first major deal with a frontier lab, and the rest is kind of history.”

On Monday, the company behind Design Arena — known as Intelligence — announced a $7.9 million seed round led by Index Ventures, with participation from Conviction (Sarah Guo and Mike Vernal), A*, Valkyrie, and others.

For non-enterprise users, utilizing Design Arena resembles operating a sophisticated model router. It features a ChatGPT-style interface for prompts, along with dropdowns for websites, images, and various visual formats. After inputting the request, format, and style, users receive a series of “A vs. B” choices to rank the outputs from best to worst.

While the service is beneficial, the platform's true value lies in its enterprise side, where participating models can leverage it as a source of continuous instant feedback for their media-generating models. Users typically do not care which models they are ranking; as Li puts it, they simply desire the best output available, making their rankings crucial for understanding user preferences.

For frontier labs, this service is worth the investment, Li notes, adding that the site currently generates $60 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), solidifying its role as a vital source of human-led evaluation data for the AI industry.

Importantly, users must log in to access their outputs, allowing Intelligence to track how preferences evolve across different regions and over time. Li observes that web dashboards in Asia often exhibit a more maximalist design style. These metrics serve as a critical complement to automated benchmarks, which, while scalable, can be susceptible to manipulation, as evidenced by the recent Hugging Face breach.

However, crowdsourced human feedback is not guaranteed to succeed in the market. Less than a year after its launch, Yupp closed its doors earlier this year after raising $33 million from a16z crypto’s Chris Dixon. Despite securing some frontier models as customers and claiming over 1.3 million users, it struggled to establish a sustainable long-term business.

The challenges faced by Yupp highlight the competitive and rapidly evolving landscape of AI feedback mechanisms. Many startups are vying for a share of the market, and while some have found success, others have faltered.
