The 2nd edition of the Inter-School Volleyball League concluded with Gilgal School and Isaiah Ability Higher Secondary School winning in their respective categories.

WOKHA, AUG 29: The 2nd edition of the Inter-School Volleyball League 2026 concluded at the Public Ground, Wokha on August 29, with Gilgal School Wokha and Isaiah Ability Higher Secondary School clinching the championship titles in the girls’ and boys’ categories respectively.

Organised by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, in collaboration with the Wokha District Volleyball Association, the tournament was held under the theme, “Play with Passion, Win with Respect.” A total of nine schools competed in the boys’ category, while six schools participated in the girls’ category, showcasing a diverse range of talent and enthusiasm for the sport.

Volleyball, as a team sport, has gained popularity in various regions of India, particularly in the northeastern states where it is often played at both school and community levels. The Inter-School Volleyball League serves as an important platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and compete in a healthy environment. The event not only promotes physical fitness but also encourages teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking among the participants.

In the girls’ category, Gilgal School Wokha emerged victorious, defeating St. Peter School Wokha, who finished as runners-up. This victory is significant as it reflects the hard work and dedication of the Gilgal School team, which has been training rigorously in preparation for this tournament. The match was marked by intense rallies and impressive displays of sportsmanship, with both teams demonstrating their commitment to the game.

In the boys’ category, Isaiah Ability Higher Secondary School secured the championship title, with St. Peter School taking the runners-up position. The boys' final was particularly thrilling, showcasing high-energy plays and strategic maneuvers that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. The competitive spirit was palpable, and the players exhibited not only their skills but also a deep respect for their opponents, aligning with the tournament's theme.

Special recognition was given to teams for discipline: Little Angels School received the Best Discipline award in the boys’ category, while Santsuo School was adjudged the Best Disciplined team in the girls’ category. These awards highlight the importance of discipline in sports, which is essential for both individual and team success. Maintaining discipline helps in fostering a positive environment and encourages players to focus on their training and performance.

The Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, K. Mhathung Tsanglao, graced the closing ceremony as the special guest. In his address, he encouraged students to take sports seriously as part of their co-curricular activities, stressing the importance of dedication, discipline, and respect for opponents. His presence at the event underscores the support from local authorities for youth engagement in sports, which is crucial for the holistic development of students.

He highlighted the role of teamwork and sportsmanship in shaping character and urged students to actively engage in sporting activities rather than remain idle. The Deputy Commissioner further noted that consistent effort and commitment could open opportunities for students to compete at higher levels and even represent the nation in the future. This statement resonates deeply in a country where sports can sometimes serve as a pathway to scholarships, professional careers, and national pride.

Moreover, the emphasis on sports as a means of character building aligns with broader educational goals, where physical education is increasingly recognized as vital to developing well-rounded individuals. The benefits of participating in sports extend beyond physical health; they also include improved mental well-being, enhanced social skills, and increased resilience among young people.

The event concluded with a call for greater involvement in sports across the district, reinforcing the idea that sports can serve as a unifying force in communities. The success of the Inter-School Volleyball League has the potential to inspire other schools and districts to organize similar events, fostering a culture of sportsmanship and healthy competition among the youth.

As the tournament wraps up, it leaves behind a legacy of inspiration for future athletes, encouraging them to pursue their passions with vigor and respect. With the continued support of educational institutions and local authorities, the future of sports in Wokha and beyond looks promising, paving the way for the next generation of athletes to emerge and thrive.
