The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council organized various sporting activities across the Union Territory to celebrate National Sports Day, engaging young athletes in multiple sports.

The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council Friday organised a series of sporting activities across the Union Territory to mark National Sports Day, with young athletes participating in kabaddi, hockey, football, cycling, Wushu, volleyball, kho-kho and athletics under the theme, "Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat." This initiative aligns with the national vision of promoting sports at the grassroots level, encouraging youth participation in various physical activities, and nurturing emerging talent.

National Sports Day is celebrated annually in India on August 29, commemorating the birthday of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, who is remembered for his extraordinary contributions to Indian sports. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of sports in fostering a healthy lifestyle, teamwork, and discipline among the youth. The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council's activities reflect a broader push to promote sports culture in the region, particularly in the aftermath of historical challenges that have limited youth engagement in physical activities.

As per a statement, a series of sporting activities were held across Budgam, Kishtwar, and Ramban as part of Sports Week celebrations under the "My Youth, My Pride" initiative ahead of National Sports Day. This initiative is designed to engage young people in sports and physical activities, highlighting the importance of fitness and health. The events included competitions in Wushu, football, volleyball, kho-kho, and athletics, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and talents.

A special Wushu activity was held at the Indoor Sports Hall in Budgam, drawing over 90 young athletes across various age categories and genders. Conducted under the supervision of the Indoor Sports Hall's In-Charge Manager in collaboration with Khelo India Wushu Mentor Maqsood Ahmad Rather, the event was instrumental in promoting martial arts among the youth. Wushu, a form of Chinese martial arts, has gained popularity in India, and events like this help to cultivate discipline, focus, and physical fitness among participants. Medals and certificates were distributed to winners and participants at the close of the event, fostering a sense of achievement and motivation among the athletes.

Ahead of National Sports Day, Khelo India Mentors Sandeep Singh, Rohit Chohan, Rajesh Kumar, Mohd Aris Khan, and Aman Verma, along with Groundman Bitto Ram, organised Volleyball, Kho-Kho, and athletics competitions at the Indoor Sports Hall in Kishtwar. The event, held under the leadership of J&K Sports Council Secretary Nuzhat Gull and District Sports Officer Bashir Ahmad, drew around 100 players and six officials. Tehsildar Kishtwar Suman Sharma attended as Guest of Honour, commending the initiative and urging youth to take up sports for fitness and character-building. This emphasis on character development through sports is crucial, as it not only promotes physical health but also instills values such as teamwork and perseverance in young people.

At Govt. Model Hr. Sec. School in Banihal, Khelo India Centre Mentors organised a football activity as part of the Khelo India Jeetega India campaign. The event saw participation from 40 players and officials, highlighting the growing interest in football among the youth in Jammu and Kashmir. Football has become one of the most popular sports globally, and initiatives like this aim to harness that interest to promote physical fitness and community engagement.

Together, these activities reflect the J&K Sports Council's continued push to expand grassroots sporting opportunities across the Union Territory, identify emerging talent, and build a culture of fitness and discipline among the region's youth ahead of National Sports Day. The Council's efforts are vital in a region where sports can serve as a unifying force, bringing together diverse communities and fostering a sense of belonging among young people.

At the Indoor Sports Complex in Doda, a Kabaddi competition was organised, with around 40 participants showcasing their skills. Kabaddi, a traditional Indian sport that combines elements of wrestling and tag, has seen a resurgence in popularity across the country, and events like this are essential for preserving cultural sports while promoting physical fitness. The enthusiasm, discipline, and sportsmanship displayed by the participants were commendable and indicative of the potential that exists within the region.

The programme was organized by the Incharge of the Sports Stadium in Doda, with the support of concerned officials, emphasizing the collaborative efforts required to successfully execute such initiatives. In a separate event, National Sports Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm under the banner of the J&K Sports Council at K K Hakku Stadium, with the aim of promoting sports, fitness, discipline, and a healthy lifestyle among the youth.

The occasion was graced by Ramesh Sharma, IAS, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, as the Chief Guest. His presence underscored the importance of governmental support in promoting sports at the grassroots level. Various sports activities were organised to mark National Sports Day, witnessing enthusiastic participation from athletes, coaches, officials, and sports enthusiasts. The Chief Guest interacted with the players and encouraged them to participate actively in sports and make physical fitness an integral part of their lives. He highlighted the important role of sports in developing discipline, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship among the younger generation, which are essential qualities for personal and professional success.

The dignitaries appreciated the efforts of the J&K Sports Council in promoting sports culture and providing opportunities and platforms to budding sportspersons. Such recognition is crucial in motivating young athletes and ensuring that they continue to pursue their passion for sports. As part of the celebrations of National Sports Day 2026, the Khelo India cyclists of Budgam participated in a special cycling activity aimed at promoting fitness, endurance, discipline, and the sporting spirit among young athletes. Cycling, as a sport, promotes not only physical health but also environmental awareness, making it a dual-purpose activity that benefits both individuals and society.

In conclusion, the events organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council on National Sports Day reflect a significant commitment to fostering a vibrant sports culture in the region. By engaging young athletes in diverse sports, the Council is not only promoting physical fitness but also instilling essential life skills that will benefit them in various aspects of their lives. The continued emphasis on grassroots development and the support from local authorities are vital for the sustainable growth of sports in Jammu and Kashmir, paving the way for future champions.
