Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will miss the rest of the 2026 season due to a ligament tear in his ankle, impacting his participation in major upcoming events.
New Delhi, India Aug 29, 2026 ALN: Star Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 season after suffering a ligament tear in his ankle during training, forcing the two-time Olympic medallist to miss next month's Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The setback will also keep Chopra out of the Diamond League Finals in Brussels on September 5 and the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest from September 11 to 13, bringing an abrupt end to a season in which he had only recently begun to regain momentum following a delayed return from injury.
Chopra announced the news in a post on his X account on Saturday, saying the decision to sit out the remainder of the season was taken after consultations with his doctor and team.
"After a period of hard work, I finally felt I was gaining the momentum I had been looking for with a Season’s Best throw in Lausanne. Unfortunately, shortly after, I sustained a ligament tear in my ankle during training. After discussions with my doctor and team, we’ve decided that I will sit out the rest of this season," Chopra stated in a post on his ‘X’ account on Saturday.
The 2026 season had already been a challenging one for Chopra, whose return to competition was delayed until June because of a lower back injury that had troubled him since September last year. This back injury had initially sidelined him and raised concerns about his fitness and readiness for key competitions, including the Asian Games and the Diamond League.
Despite not being fully fit, the Indian star managed to produce encouraging performances after his return. He won silver at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games with a throw of 85.83m before registering his season's best effort of 88.05m at the Lausanne Diamond League. These performances highlighted his resilience and determination to bounce back from injury, showcasing his potential to reclaim his position among the world's elite javelin throwers.
The performance in Lausanne had offered signs that Chopra was rediscovering his rhythm, making the latest injury setback particularly frustrating for the reigning Olympic medallist. His ability to perform well despite ongoing challenges speaks volumes about his commitment to the sport and his mental fortitude.
"It’s disappointing, especially because I felt close to finding my rhythm. But as they say, setbacks are a part of the journey. My focus now is on recovering well and coming back even stronger. Thank you all for the love and support," he added. This statement reflects Chopra's positive mindset, which is crucial for athletes facing injuries, as mental resilience often plays a significant role in recovery and future performance.
Chopra had also earned his place in the Diamond League finale after collecting 12 points during the season. A fourth-place finish in Doha and a second place in Lausanne on August 21 helped him secure sixth position in the final standings after the conclusion of the 14th and final leg of the series in Zurich on Thursday. His performance throughout the season demonstrated that he still possesses the talent and skill to compete at the highest levels, even while managing his physical health.
He was also on course to compete at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships before turning his attention to the Asian Games in Japan later next month. The Asian Games are particularly significant for Chopra, as they represent a major international competition where he has previously excelled. Missing out on these events not only affects his competitive schedule but also has implications for his preparation for future championships, including the Olympics.
Instead, Chopra will now face another spell on the sidelines as he focuses on recovering from the ankle injury and preparing for his return to competition. This injury underscores the physical demands placed on elite athletes, particularly in high-impact sports like javelin throwing, where the risk of injury is always present. The recovery process will likely involve a combination of rehabilitation, physical therapy, and a gradual return to training to ensure he can compete safely and effectively in the future.
Chopra's absence from key competitions will be felt not only by him but also by fans and the Indian athletics community, who have witnessed his rise as a global sports icon. His achievements have inspired many young athletes in India and have contributed to a growing interest in athletics in the country. As he focuses on his recovery, there will be significant anticipation regarding his return to form and the impact he will have on future events.
Overall, Neeraj Chopra’s injury is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports and the challenges athletes face in their careers. While this season has ended prematurely for him, the hope remains that he will emerge from this setback stronger and ready to compete at the highest levels once again.
