Kohima, India Aug 26, 2026 ALN: KOLKATA, AUG 25: The NCC School Under 17 Girls Football Team from Aizawl, Mizoram, representing the Shillong-based NCC Directorate of North Eastern Region, has stormed into the finals of the 65th Subroto Cup (Junior Girls category). The team defeated Chhattisgarh 2-1 in the semi-final and will face Jharkhand in the final on Thursday, August 27, 2026. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the team, which has been working diligently to develop their skills and compete at a high level in youth football.

The Subroto Cup is a prestigious tournament in India that has been a platform for young footballers to showcase their talent since its inception. The 65th edition of the Subroto Cup has brought together 106 teams across various categories, with matches being held in key locations such as Delhi NCR and Bengaluru. Initially, until 1997, the tournament was conducted exclusively for the Boys U-17 category. Recognizing the growing interest and potential in women's football, the tournament introduced a Girls U-17 category in 2012, aiming to further encourage participation among young female athletes. This addition has been instrumental in providing young girls with an opportunity to play competitive football and gain valuable experience in the sport.

The Subroto Cup is named after Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, the first Indian Chief of Air Staff, who was a passionate football enthusiast. The tournament began in 1960, following Mukerjee's vision of promoting sports among school children. After his untimely demise in Tokyo, the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society was established to continue his legacy and organize the tournament. The first edition of the Subroto Cup attracted around 50 school teams, all from Delhi. Today, the tournament has expanded exponentially, with nearly 34,000 school teams from across India competing at the state level before qualifying for the main tournament. On Tuesday, the Army’s Eastern Command congratulated the Aizawl girls on social media, posting: “Into the Final!
