DHSK College Commemorates 98th Death Anniversary of Chengjapao Doungel

Dispur, India Aug 29, 2026 ALN: The 98th death anniversary of Pu Chengjapao Doungel, a tribal freedom fighter and prominent leader of the Anglo-Kuki War (1917–1919), was observed for the first time at DHSK College, Dibrugarh, on Friday. This event not only honored Doungel's legacy but also aimed to shed light on the broader struggle of tribal communities in Northeast India against colonial rule.

The Anglo-Kuki War, which took place between 1917 and 1919, was a significant conflict that arose from the Kuki tribes' resistance to British colonial expansion in the region. The war was characterized by fierce battles and a strong sense of tribal identity, as various Kuki clans united to oppose British incursions into their lands. Chengjapao Doungel emerged as a key figure during this tumultuous period, leading his people with courage and determination. The programme was jointly organised by the Tribal Research and Development Centre and the Department of Political Science, DHSK College, to remember Doungel’s life, struggle, and sacrifice and bring greater attention to the history of tribal resistance in Northeast India. A major highlight was an illustrated presentation by Dr Lamkholal Doungel, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, who presented a detailed account of the tribal leader’s life, leadership, and resistance. Through the use of historical photographs, documents, and other archival materials, Dr. Doungel was able to contextualize the circumstances surrounding the Anglo-Kuki War, providing attendees with a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the Kuki tribes during British rule. Dr Doungel also introduced his recently authored book, Pu. Chengjapao Doungel: An Unsung Hero – A Short Illustrated Account of the Life, Struggle and Sacrifice of a Freedom Fighter. The book was formally released by DHSK College Principal Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia in the presence of other dignitaries. Vice-Principal Dr Partha Ganguli described Doungel as an ‘unsung hero’ and highlighted the importance of commemorative programmes that could take his story and that of the Anglo-Kuki War to audiences beyond his own community.
