Naga Independence Day: Calls for Unity and Political Resolution

Kohima, India Aug 14, 2026 ALN: The 80th Naga Independence Day commemoration programme was observed on August 14 with calls for Naga unity, preservation of the community’s collective identity, and an early, honourable settlement to the Naga political issue. This day marks a significant historical moment for the Naga people, who have been navigating a complex political landscape for decades. The observance of Naga Independence Day is rooted in a history that dates back to the mid-20th century, a time when the aspirations for self-determination and autonomy began to take shape among the Naga tribes.

The Naga people, who primarily inhabit the northeastern region of India and parts of Myanmar, have a rich cultural heritage and a distinct identity that they have fiercely protected. The call for independence stems from a long-standing desire to preserve their cultural integrity and political autonomy, which they feel has been threatened by external forces and governmental policies. The historical context of this struggle includes the formation of various Naga organizations that have sought to address the political aspirations of the community, culminating in the establishment of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) in 1947.

Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) president Mteisuding described the occasion as a significant day for the Naga people and said the community had continued to live with dignity despite decades of political conflict and challenges. He reminded young Nagas that the NSF was established not merely to represent students but also to carry forward the aspirations and rights of the Naga people. The NSF has played a pivotal role in advocating for the rights of the Naga youth and engaging with broader socio-political issues affecting the community.

Mteisudang highlighted the historical roots of the Naga independence movement, noting that Naga leaders and visionaries came together in 1946, leading to the formal formation of the NSF on October 29, 1947. This period was marked by a growing consciousness among the Naga people regarding their identity and rights, which led to the emergence of various political movements aimed at achieving greater autonomy or independence. He emphasized that the federation had since remained engaged with issues affecting students, young people, and the wider Naga public, advocating for educational rights, cultural preservation, and political representation.

In his address, Mteisudang expressed gratitude towards Naga leaders who had sacrificed their lives and time for the Naga cause. He recalled the July 19, 1947 meeting between a Naga delegation led by AZ Phizo and Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi, referring to Gandhi’s assurance that the Nagas should not be forced into the Indian Union if they did not wish to be part of it. This meeting is often seen as a pivotal moment in the Naga political narrative, as it underscored the aspirations of the Naga people for self-determination and respect for their rights.

Mteisudang emphasized that the historical developments surrounding this period are crucial to why Nagas observe August 14 as Naga Independence Day. He insisted that the day should not be reduced to a ceremonial gathering but remembered as a historic moment in the Naga political journey. The observance serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by past leaders and the ongoing struggle for recognition and autonomy. It is a day of reflection for the Naga people, who remember their past while looking towards the future.

The NSF president called on the Government of India to honour commitments made towards finding a solution. “We call for the finalisation of an honourable settlement based on the principle of coexistence,” he stated. This call reflects a broader demand among various Naga groups for a political resolution that respects their rights and aspirations. The complexity of the Naga political issue involves various stakeholders, including multiple political factions within the Naga community, the Indian government, and neighboring states that have a vested interest in the region.

He further appealed to all Naga political groups to set aside differences and work towards a mutually acceptable and beneficial settlement. The call for unity is critical, as fragmentation among different groups can weaken the collective bargaining power of the Naga people in negotiations with the government.

Mteisudang also referred to a resolution adopted during the NSF’s second Federal Assembly at Jhumpa village in present-day Western Karbi Anglong, Assam, stating that the federation had resolved to strengthen the unity of Nagas across administrative boundaries and protect their collective identity. The geographical divisions among the Naga tribes have often been a source of tension and conflict, making the call for unity even more pertinent. He urged Naga political groups to refrain from recruiting non-Nagas into the Naga political movement, emphasizing the need to maintain the integrity of their struggle.

He called for Nagas to put aside tribal and individual differences and work towards a shared destiny. “First Naga, second Naga, and last Naga,” he urged, emphasizing the need for commitment to “one destiny, one aspiration, one people, and one determination.” This message resonates deeply within the community, as many Nagas believe that their strength lies in their ability to unite despite their diverse backgrounds and traditions.

Meanwhile, Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) president, Nuhemong Yimchunger, spoke of the distinct identity, heritage, culture, and customary practices of the Naga people. He noted that Nagas have faced repeated attempts to overpower or divide them but have continued to stand firm, crediting the courage, conviction, and sacrifices of past leaders for keeping the Naga identity alive. The preservation of cultural heritage is seen as a crucial aspect of the Naga struggle, as it reinforces their claims for autonomy and self-determination.

Referring to the geographical and administrative divisions among the Nagas, Yimchunger stated that the common aspiration of the people has never been confined by political boundaries. This statement highlights the inherent challenges faced by the Naga people, who are often divided not only by tribal affiliations but also by state boundaries that have been drawn without their consent. He urged the younger generation to carry forward the sense of unity and patriotism instilled by their elders and to continue working towards the common aspirations of the Naga people.

He cautioned Naga leaders and organizations against remaining in their comfort zones, asserting that the future generation would judge the present generation by the choices it made today. This call for introspection is vital, as it encourages leaders to reflect on their actions and the potential long-term impacts on the Naga struggle. He acknowledged that the Naga aspiration may take time to realize, but maintaining unity, love, harmony, and care for one another would keep the common dream alive. The celebration, he said, should serve as a reminder that the Naga struggle is not the responsibility of any single tribe or individual but a collective responsibility of the Naga people.

“We still have a fight to fight—not as individuals, but as Nagas,” he concluded.
