Support Wings organized 'Little Smiles' in Shillong, engaging children at a local orphanage through interactive learning and creative activities.

Sometimes, all it takes to light up a child’s day is a little time, laughter, and heart.

Living by this spirit, youth-led organisation Support Wings organised ā€˜Little Smiles’ — an engagement initiative for children at a local orphanage in Langkyrding, Shillong — bringing together 10 young volunteers for an afternoon of learning, creativity, and connection.

The initiative went beyond recreation. Volunteers led interactive sessions on children’s rights and life skills including self-awareness and values, helping children engage with meaningful ideas in a fun way. This was paired with drawing and dancing, which brought energy and laughter to the day.

Through structured learning and play, volunteers spent quality time with the children, encouraging them to open up and express themselves.

For many children, it was a rare chance to be heard — to talk about themselves, share thoughts, and feel someone was genuinely paying attention.

ā€œAt Support Wings, we believe real impact comes from meeting children where they are, with warmth, patience, and genuine care. Little Smiles in Shillong was a wonderful example of that — our volunteers didn’t just bring a few hours of fun, they helped children build a little more awareness and confidence,ā€ said Krusha Seth, Senior Director of Support Wings.

The initiative is part of Support Wings’ broader effort to reach children in underserved communities across the Northeast. The organisation is active across 80+ cities in India, working through community service, environmental conservation, education, and volunteer-driven initiatives.

Support Wings was founded with the mission to empower young people and create positive change in society. The organisation believes in the potential of youth to be agents of change and works to equip them with the necessary skills and opportunities to make a difference. The 'Little Smiles' initiative is a testament to this philosophy, as it not only engages children but also inspires young volunteers to take part in meaningful community service.

In the context of Shillong, a city known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, the challenges faced by orphaned and underprivileged children are often overlooked. The region, while picturesque, has its share of socio-economic issues, including poverty, lack of access to quality education, and inadequate healthcare facilities. Initiatives like 'Little Smiles' aim to bridge these gaps by providing children with both emotional support and educational resources.

Moreover, the involvement of volunteers from diverse backgrounds enhances the experience for the children. By interacting with individuals from different walks of life, the children are exposed to new ideas and perspectives, fostering a sense of inclusivity and broadening their horizons. This is particularly important in a multicultural society like Shillong, where understanding and appreciating diversity can play a crucial role in personal development.

Support Wings’ approach emphasizes the importance of play in learning. Research has shown that play is not just a leisure activity but a vital component of childhood development. It enhances cognitive abilities, social skills, and emotional resilience. By incorporating fun activities such as drawing and dancing into the sessions, the volunteers helped create a safe and joyful environment for the children, allowing them to learn and grow in a holistic manner.

Furthermore, the focus on children’s rights and life skills is particularly relevant in today's world, where many children face various forms of adversity. By educating them about their rights and instilling values such as self-awareness and confidence, initiatives like 'Little Smiles' empower children to advocate for themselves and navigate the complexities of life with greater assurance.

The success of this initiative could serve as a model for similar programs in other regions, highlighting the importance of community involvement in the lives of vulnerable children. As Support Wings continues to expand its reach, it aims to replicate the positive outcomes observed in Shillong in other underserved areas, thereby creating a ripple effect of joy and empowerment.

In conclusion, the 'Little Smiles' initiative by Support Wings is more than just a day of fun; it is a meaningful engagement that fosters growth, awareness, and connection among children in an orphanage in Shillong. Through their efforts, the volunteers not only bring joy but also contribute to building a more supportive and understanding community for the next generation. This initiative stands as a reminder of the profound impact that compassion and active involvement can have in transforming lives, one smile at a time.
