SMRT's new Bus 4.0 initiative aims to enhance bus operations through advanced technology, enabling quicker responses and improved safety for commuters.

Public transport operator SMRT has launched a transformative initiative named "Bus 4.0" aimed at revolutionizing how it manages and maintains its bus fleet. This $6 million initiative is designed to help SMRT identify risks earlier, coordinate responses more efficiently, and act proactively to prevent issues that could affect commuters.

The foundation of Bus 4.0 lies in the installation of telematics across the entire bus fleet managed by SMRT. This technology allows for a comprehensive view of the network, enabling the identification of emerging problems and swift action on critical issues, as explained by SMRT chairman Seah Moon Ming during the launch at Gali Batu Depot.

Seah emphasized that the initiative is ultimately about fulfilling promises to the public—ensuring safer journeys, more reliable services, and quicker responses to incidents.

Seeing, Coordinating, and Acting

According to a factsheet provided to the media, Bus 4.0 is structured around four key pillars: Intelligent Bus (iBUS), Intelligent Operations Control Centre (iOCC), Intelligent Depot (iDepot), and Intelligent Workforce (iWorkforce). With the Bus Telematics System (BTS) deployed across its fleet, SMRT can now collect real-time operational, safety, and vehicle health data.

This data enables bus controllers to monitor safety for bus captains, including fatigue detection, and helps identify risks such as bus bunching, where multiple buses arrive at a stop simultaneously, leading to longer wait times for passengers.

Other functionalities include vehicle health monitoring, detection of road hazards, and ensuring wheelchair users are safely secured when boarding. The iOCC serves as SMRT's nerve center for bus operations, consolidating real-time information on fleet deployment, bus health, electric bus charging, and road traffic conditions, facilitating timely interventions.

Previously, about 20 controllers managed over 1,200 buses, relying heavily on updates from bus captains to gauge ground conditions. This approach posed risks of missing emerging issues due to attention saturation. The new iOCC provides an integrated view of real-time information, supplemented by AI-driven prompts that flag potential problems.

During rail disruptions, the iOCC will also coordinate buses, taxis, and private-hire vehicles from a single command center, enhancing operational efficiency.

Machines and People

The iDepot aims to enhance bus depot operations and data-driven maintenance through automation and predictive analytics. Notably, an autonomous surveillance robot dog will patrol the depot using infrared sensors to monitor buses and charging areas for abnormal heat, providing early warnings of potential overheating.

This technology will also assist in automatically identifying and recording bus registration numbers, improving the bus locator system and helping bus captains find their assigned buses more quickly. Another autonomous robot will conduct routine cleaning while monitoring for security anomalies.

Additionally, IoT sensors on critical equipment will enable continuous monitoring, allowing for early warnings of abnormal operating conditions and signs of equipment deterioration.

However, technology must ultimately benefit people, as highlighted by SMRT's chairman. The iWorkforce pillar focuses on equipping bus captains, service controllers, and technicians with digital tools, training, and incentives to build a future-ready workforce.

As part of this initiative, a safe driving incentive has been introduced, allowing bus captains to earn up to $600 in grocery vouchers annually based on their safety records. The youngest bus captain, Jayrius Ong, 23, shared his positive experience with the system, noting improvements in his driving record.

SMRT has also implemented a skills allowance for service controllers to recognize their expanded roles in risk assessment and incident prevention, supported by grants from the National Trades Union Congress and the National Transport Workers' Union.

Bus captains and technicians are receiving virtual reality training and assisted reality support, further enhancing their skills. In summary, Seah emphasized that Bus 4.0 is not just about creating a more impressive control center but about improving bus operations to deliver safer and more reliable journeys.
