Doha, Qatar Aug 26, 2026 ALN: Kannur: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has submitted a preliminary report to the Kannur Collector following the collapse of a retaining wall along the under-construction NH 66 at Elayavoor South on Monday. This incident has raised significant safety concerns among local residents and authorities alike, as it highlights potential flaws in the construction and maintenance practices of critical infrastructure.

The retaining wall, which was part of the ongoing highway construction, collapsed early in the morning around 5:45 AM. Witnesses reported that a substantial section of the retaining structure gave way, resulting in a noticeable sinkage of approximately 15 feet at the affected site. This alarming development has prompted immediate attention from both local residents and government officials.

In the wake of the collapse, local residents swiftly alerted the authorities and the NHAI about the incident. Kannur District Collector Vishnuraj P responded promptly by requesting a report from the NHAI to ascertain the situation and the potential risks posed to the surrounding area. The Collector confirmed to reporters that the NHAI had indeed submitted a preliminary report detailing the incident.

"They came and inspected the site at that time. They just filled the crack and left, and did nothing else," she remarked, highlighting a perceived lack of adequate response from the authorities.

The collapse occurred on the property of a resident named Vimal, who expressed his distress over the situation. According to Vijina, the NHAI had constructed a road connecting Vimal's house to the main road only six months prior to the incident. "Now I don't have a road and I can't bring my car to my house," Vimal lamented. He further noted that the site had a history of instability, recalling a major landslip that had occurred three years ago, which prompted the NHAI to build a retaining wall and fill the area with soil. Unfortunately, it appears that these measures were insufficient to ensure the long-term stability of the site, as it has now collapsed again.
