Naga Civilians Killed in Ambush Returned to Senapati for Post-Mortem

Kohima, India Aug 28, 2026 ALN: Senapati: The mortal remains of four Naga civilians killed in an ambush in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Thursday were brought to Senapati District Hospital on Friday morning for post-mortem examinations. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and grief among the local population, highlighting the ongoing tensions and violence in the region.

The bodies were escorted by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) after a tense standoff over their movement from the incident site. Such military escorts have become increasingly common in regions affected by conflict, as they aim to ensure the safe transit of individuals in volatile environments. The presence of security forces, however, often escalates tensions rather than alleviating them, as seen in this case.

On Thursday evening, an irate mob stormed the Senapati Superintendent of Police (SP) office after CRPF personnel sent to retrieve the bodies were reportedly denied passage by residents of T Waichong village. This reaction underscores the deep-seated frustrations within the community, which may stem from a perceived lack of protection and justice in light of ongoing violence in the region. The ambush, which resulted in the loss of civilian lives, is symptomatic of the broader conflict involving various ethnic groups in Manipur, particularly between the Naga and Kuki communities.

The Kangpokpi SP later visited the area to assess the situation, following which the bodies were allowed to proceed under CRPF escort on Friday morning. This intervention by the local police aimed to de-escalate the situation and facilitate the transportation of the bodies, but it also reflects the complex dynamics between law enforcement and local communities in conflict zones.

The mortal remains were first received by civil society organizations in Senapati at Thonglang Atongba, a Laingmei village, at around 8:30 am. The village authority presented four shawls for the deceased during the reception—a traditional gesture of respect and mourning in many Naga communities. This act signifies the collective grief and solidarity of the community in the face of tragedy, as well as the cultural practices that honor the dead.

The bodies reached Senapati District Hospital at around 10:24 am, where post-mortem examinations were underway. Student leader Japou MK of Thonglang Akutpa, who reportedly escaped the attack, is also at the hospital, indicating the widespread fear and uncertainty that permeates the community in the wake of the ambush.

The United Naga Council (UNC) condemned the attack, alleging that it was carried out by Kuki armed militants, and demanded a Special Investigation Team to conduct a thorough and impartial probe. The UNC has also called for a 12-hour ‘Genna’ from 6 am to 6 pm on Friday across Naga-inhabited areas and districts.
