Ukraine Launches Largest Drone Attack of 2026, Resulting in Casualties

In the capital city of Kyiv, air-raid sirens were activated four times overnight as Russian forces launched attacks. Reports indicate that at least six people, including a child, were injured during these strikes. Russian officials claimed that their attacks on Kyiv targeted a FirePoint facility responsible for producing parts for Ukrainian Flamingo missiles, along with a factory that manufactures components for drones. The strikes resulted in damage to a book market in the Pochayna district of Kyiv, where burnt books were left scattered on the ground as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

Amid the chaos, personal of loss emerged. Valentina, a 69-year-old woman whose husband owned a market stall, recounted her devastation as she sifted through the rubble of the market, recognizing the remains of her husband's stock. "All these books in the street were from my husband's stall in the market - I recognize them on the floor," she said, reflecting on the unexpected nature of such violence. Another business owner, Luba, 42, expressed her anguish over the destruction of her vinyl store, estimating a loss of 500,000 hryvnias (£8,262) worth of stock. "This business was my baby - many of the vinyls destroyed were rare and irreplaceable," she lamented, expressing her deep frustration and anger towards Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the ongoing violence, stating that 13 regions had been targeted in attacks throughout the week. He reported that Russia launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs, and 62 missiles during this period. "Wherever the Russians can reach with their ballistic missiles, they strike civilian infrastructure," he asserted, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the assaults on urban areas.
