Telangana Police Seize ₹5.15 Crore in Assets Linked to Alprazolam Smugglers

This unprecedented action marks the first time such a seizure has occurred in the state, highlighting the authorities' commitment to combatting drug-related crimes. The operation reflects a growing recognition of the severity of drug abuse and trafficking in India, particularly in states like Telangana, where the drug problem has been escalating in recent years.

The crackdown on alprazolam, a potent benzodiazepine often misused for its sedative effects, underscores the increasing concerns surrounding prescription drug abuse. Following directives from the Nizamabad Commissioner of Police, P. Sai Chaitanya, the Bodhan Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), P. Srinivas, and his team undertook a thorough investigation into an interstate network allegedly involved in the manufacture and distribution of alprazolam. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against five individuals suspected of being part of this drug trafficking operation. This legal framework is crucial for addressing narcotics-related offenses and provides law enforcement with the necessary tools to combat drug crimes effectively.

All five suspects have been arrested and are currently in judicial custody. During the operation, police confiscated approximately 2.5 kg of alprazolam, valued at around ₹25 lakh, along with a car, eight mobile phones, and ₹2.50 lakh in cash from the accused. This seizure not only disrupts the immediate supply chain of alprazolam but also serves as a deterrent to others involved in similar illicit activities.

Investigation and Discoveries

As part of the investigation, police interrogated the suspects to gather further information regarding the manufacture and supply of alprazolam. A special team comprising 15 police personnel, led by Bodhan Rural Circle Inspector D. Vijay Babu, traveled to Maharashtra to continue their inquiries. This interstate collaboration is a critical component in tackling drug trafficking, as many such networks operate across state lines, complicating enforcement efforts.

During their investigation, the police identified a factory located in the Satara industrial area that had been authorized to manufacture fertilizers under the name Surya Prabha Pharma Chem. However, it was discovered that the factory had been illegally producing alprazolam. The use of legitimate businesses as fronts for illegal drug production is a common tactic employed by traffickers, making it essential for law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and conduct thorough inspections of such establishments.

In subsequent searches, police seized around 30 kg of alprazolam, valued at approximately ₹3 crore, along with ₹12 lakh in cash and a Ford car. The factory has since been sealed by the authorities, preventing any further illegal operations. Asset Seizure and Future Actions

Following the seizure of the drugs and cash, police approached the sub-registrar and tahsildar offices in Pune, Satara, and Ahmednagar districts of Maharashtra to gather information on the movable and immovable properties owned by the accused and their family members. These properties are believed to have been acquired through the illegal sale of alprazolam by the suspects, identified as Amarsingh, Basavaraj, and Laxman Goud. The investigation into asset acquisition is a vital step in dismantling the financial backbone of drug trafficking operations.

According to police estimates, the seized properties are valued at around ₹5.15 crore based on government valuation, although their market value is likely to be higher. Authorities have also collected and analyzed mobile phone data related to approximately 20 individuals connected to the case, sharing this information with relevant authorities for further investigation.
