Vellore and Surrounding Districts Celebrate 80th Independence Day with Honors and Community Recognition

Chennai, India Aug 16, 2026 ALN: The 80th Independence Day was celebrated with fervour in Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts on Saturday. This year’s celebrations marked a significant milestone in India’s history, commemorating the day when the nation gained independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The observance of Independence Day is not only a celebration of freedom but also a time for reflection on the sacrifices made by countless individuals who fought for the country’s sovereignty.

In Vellore, the celebrations were led by Collector P.S. Leela Alex, who unfurled the tricolour at Nethaji Stadium. This event is part of a long-standing tradition where the local government officials and community leaders come together to honor the day. The Collector also reviewed the Guard of Honour, a ceremonial practice that signifies respect and acknowledgment of the armed forces and their role in safeguarding the nation. As part of the ceremonies, she honored 66 family members of freedom fighters, recognizing their contributions to the country’s independence struggle. This act serves as a poignant reminder of the personal sacrifices made by families during the fight for freedom.

In addition to honoring freedom fighters, Collector Alex distributed appreciation certificates to 241 government staff for their commendable work. Earlier in the day, she hoisted the tricolour on the ramparts of Vellore Fort, a historical landmark that symbolizes the rich heritage of the region. Following this, she paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a pivotal figure in India’s independence movement, highlighting the values of peace and non-violence that Gandhi espoused.

Among the dignitaries present were District Revenue Officer D. Suresh, Superintendent of Police N.U. Sivaraman, project director of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Jayasudha, and Vellore Mayor Sujatha Anandakumar. Their presence underscores the collaboration between various government departments and local authorities in organizing such significant events.

Meanwhile, at the Academy of Prison and Correctional Administration (APCA) located in Thorapadi, which falls under Vellore Corporation, the 80th Independence Day was celebrated with an event that included participation from the academy’s director, B. Pradeep, and deputy director, P. Govindarajan, along with professors, staff members, and trainee officers. This celebration represents the academy’s commitment to instilling values of patriotism and civic responsibility among future law enforcement professionals.

In the neighboring Tiruvannamalai district, Collector Vandana Garg also hoisted the tricolour, continuing the tradition of local leaders marking the occasion with ceremonial flag hoisting. She distributed merit certificates to 552 government officers, employees, and representatives of NGOs, recognizing their hard work and contributions to the community. Additionally, Ms. Garg honored freedom fighters and their families, ensuring that the legacy of those who fought for independence is remembered and respected. The event was attended by Superintendent of Police D. Uthayakumar, K. Sudhakar, the District Forest Officer (DFO), A. Siva Subramanian, District Revenue Officer (DRO), and P. Kanchana, project officer, DRDA.

In Ranipet, Collector Priya Ravichandran took part in the celebrations by distributing government welfare assistance to 26 beneficiaries, amounting to ₹1.03 crore. This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to uplift marginalized communities and ensure that the benefits of development reach those in need. She also awarded merit certificates to 388 government staff for their exemplary service. The presence of officials such as Superintendent of Police P. Sibin, N. Saravanan, District Revenue Officer (DRO), and S. Selvarani, project officer, DRDA, illustrated the collaborative spirit of the administration in recognizing and rewarding public service.

Tirupattur Collector G. Ravikumar conducted the national flag hoisting ceremony at the parade ground of the district police in Pachal village near Jolarpet town. Like his counterparts, he distributed government welfare assistance to beneficiaries and merit certificates to 344 government staff from various departments, reinforcing the theme of public service and community welfare that permeates the Independence Day celebrations across the districts.

Security arrangements for the 80th Independence Day celebrations were robust, with more than 2,500 police personnel deployed across Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts.
