Rajnath Singh Affirms Indian Armed Forces' Readiness Ahead of Kargil Vijay Diwas

New Delhi, India Jul 26, 2026 ALN: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday asserted that the Indian Armed Forces are fully prepared to face any challenge, warning that while the enemy’s intentions remain unchanged and it continues to resort to proxy wars and infiltration, India’s military remains vigilant and capable of safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.

Addressing a commemorative event in Dras on the eve of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Defence Minister paid tribute to the soldiers who secured India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War, saying their courage, patriotism and determination under the harshest conditions continue to inspire both the armed forces and the nation. The Kargil War, fought between May and July 1999, was a significant conflict between India and Pakistan, marking a pivotal moment in Indian military history. The war was initiated when Pakistani soldiers and militants infiltrated positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian military's response involved extensive ground operations, air strikes, and the mobilization of various units, culminating in a decisive victory for India.

“Even as the enemy’s intentions remain unchanged and it continues to employ nefarious tactics such as proxy wars and infiltration, the Indian Defence Forces stand fully prepared to face any challenge,” Singh said. This statement reflects the ongoing tensions in the region, particularly with Pakistan, where issues surrounding Kashmir continue to be a source of conflict. The reference to proxy wars highlights the complex nature of contemporary warfare, where direct military confrontation is often replaced by insurgency, terrorism, and covert operations.

Expressing confidence in the country’s military capabilities, he said no adversary dares cast an evil eye on India as long as the patriotism and resolve of its soldiers remain steadfast. Their courage, he added, enables every Indian citizen to pursue dreams and aspirations without fear. Interacting with troops during the Barakhana, the Defence Minister emphasized that while the country takes pride in the victory achieved during the Kargil War, it must remain mindful that security challenges have not diminished. The evolving security landscape, characterized by emerging threats such as cyber warfare, drone technology, and hybrid warfare tactics, necessitates a continuous evolution of military strategies and capabilities.

He reiterated the Narendra Modi government’s commitment to the welfare of soldiers and said sustained emphasis is being placed on defence modernization to equip the armed forces with world-class weapons, advanced technology and superior training. This commitment to modernization reflects a broader trend within the Indian military, which aims to enhance its operational readiness and technological edge. The focus on self-reliance in defense production, as part of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, seeks to reduce dependency on foreign arms imports and foster indigenous manufacturing.

Lauding the military for embracing cutting-edge technologies, Singh said the stories of India’s soldiers are admired not only within the country but across the world. The integration of modern technologies, such as artificial intelligence, drones, and advanced surveillance systems, into military operations is seen as a crucial factor in enhancing the effectiveness of the Indian Armed Forces. The government's push for innovation in defense technology is also intended to foster collaboration with private sector firms and startups, thereby creating a robust defense ecosystem.

“This century belongs to us; the future belongs to us. Given the strides we have made towards self-reliance, I am confident that our defence forces will become the best in the world in the times to come,” he said. This optimistic outlook aligns with India's aspirations to emerge as a global military power, capable of projecting strength and influence in the region and beyond.

The commemorative events included ‘Shaurya Bhoj’ at Vishwanathan Stadium, where military technology such as drones and robotic mules was showcased alongside Army martial arts demonstrations and cultural performances highlighting the heritage of the region. These events serve not only to honor the sacrifices of soldiers but also to educate the public about the capabilities and advancements of the armed forces, fostering a sense of pride and connection between the military and civilians.

The Defence Minister later joined Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, senior military officers, Kargil War veterans, gallantry award recipients, Veer Naris, families of martyrs and local residents for the commemorative dinner. This gathering symbolizes the unity and respect shared among various stakeholders in the defense community, highlighting the importance of collective remembrance and support for the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

Earlier in the evening, Singh attended ‘Shaurya Sandhya’ at the Kargil War Memorial, where patriotic performances were followed by tributes to the heroes of Operation Vijay. Family members of ten Kargil War martyrs were felicitated in recognition of their sacrifice and resilience. The acknowledgment of the families of martyrs emphasizes the broader impact of military service, where the sacrifices extend beyond the battlefield and affect entire communities.

The ceremony also included the presentation of a Kalash containing ‘Veeron Ki Mitti’, inter-faith prayers, the traditional Beating Retreat ceremony, the National Anthem and the lighting of lamps at the memorial in honour of the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice. These rituals reflect the deep cultural and spiritual connections that underpin the Indian military ethos, reinforcing the values of honor, bravery, and remembrance.

The day’s events began with ‘Yudh Sansmaran’ at Lamochen View Point, where veterans of the Kargil War, families of fallen soldiers and dignitaries gathered to remember the conflict. A documentary and a special film highlighting the bravery of 40 heroes of Operation Vijay were screened, while families shared personal memories of the martyrs. This sharing of stories serves to humanize the sacrifices made during the war, allowing the younger generation to connect with their history and understand the significance of the Kargil conflict in shaping national identity.

The celebrations also featured ‘Gauravmay Sanskriti’, showcasing patriotic performances by the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre Band, a precision motorcycle display by the ‘Shwet Ashwa’ team of the Corps of Military Police Centre and School, a national integration dance by students and demonstrations of the Indian Army’s growing use of advanced technologies in high-altitude operations. These performances not only entertain but also instill a sense of pride and patriotism among the attendees, reinforcing the bond between the military and the civilian population.

The commemorations will conclude on July 26, when Singh will pay tribute to the heroes of Operation Vijay on behalf of the nation during the ‘Shradhanjali Samaroh’. This final event will serve as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Kargil War and the ongoing commitment of the nation to honor and remember its heroes.

Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorates India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War, honouring the 545 bravehearts who laid down their lives, including 537 personnel of the Indian Army, five from the Indian Air Force, one Border Security Force personnel and two civilians, whose sacrifices ensured the country’s victory and safeguarded its territorial integrity. The observance of this day is not only a reflection of gratitude towards the fallen soldiers but also a reaffirmation of India’s resolve to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any external threats.
