Violence Erupts as CJP Activists Attempt School Inspection in Rajasthan

Jaipur, India Aug 22, 2026 ALN: A team of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) activists was allegedly assaulted and chased out of Rampura-Kanwarpura village near Jaipur on Friday (August 21, 2026), when it made an attempt to inspect a government school as part of the organisation’s ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign. The vehicles of team members were damaged and women supporters were allegedly roughed up.

The CJP activists, led by party co-convener Ashutosh Ranka, had travelled to the village, situated in Bagru Assembly constituency, to inspect the Government Primary School and interact with the students and teachers. However, some villagers had barricaded the approach road and checked the vehicles entering the area.

When the team of about 40 CJP workers arrived in the village, some people confronted them, raised slogans, and asked them to leave. During a scuffle that followed, the team members were allegedly manhandled and driven out with stone-pelting. The villagers later staged a sit-in outside the school.

Allegations of Political Involvement

Mr. Ranka said one volunteer had suffered a fractured arm. He alleged that those involved in the attack had been brought in by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. “We had informed the police about our visit to Rampura-Kanwarpura. The police were aware of stone-pelting in the area but did not intervene,” he told journalists after leaving the village.

The school building had earlier been declared unsafe because of its dilapidated condition and closed. Currently, classes for students are being held in a cattle enclosure close to the building. “We had inspected the school last year as well… It was being run in a buffalo shed even then,” Mr. Ranka said.

The villagers, however, claimed that the funds for school repair work had already been sanctioned. This claim raises questions about the management of educational resources in the region and whether local governance has adequately addressed the needs of the community, particularly regarding the safety and suitability of school facilities.

Threat of Agitation

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced that he would arrive in Jaipur and launch an agitation if the school repair work did not begin, and if the BJP members who allegedly attacked CJP volunteers were not arrested within the next 48 hours. This threat of agitation underscores the rising tensions between political factions in Rajasthan, particularly concerning educational issues, which are often seen as a reflection of broader governance and accountability challenges.

The CJP, which cancelled its visit to another government school in a nearby village later in the day, claimed that the confrontation in Rampura-Kanwarpura was pre-planned and had the backing of State Education Minister Madan Dilawar. The implications of such allegations are significant, as they suggest a potential collusion between local authorities and political parties to suppress dissent and limit scrutiny of educational conditions.

Political Tensions Surrounding Education

The confrontation occurred amid a political row over a recent Education Department order imposing restrictions on the entry of outsiders into government schools and barring photography and videography without the written approval of the heads of institutions. The order was issued after CJP activists joined an agitation by students and villagers at a school in Alwar district on August 14. This order has been interpreted by many as an attempt to stifle transparency and accountability in the education sector, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to improving educational standards.

The CJP has opposed the restriction and accused the BJP government of attempting to prevent public scrutiny of the condition of government schools. The party’s ‘School Thik Karo’ campaign seeks to assess the condition of school buildings, availability of teachers, and other facilities and academic arrangements. This campaign is particularly relevant in a context where many government schools in rural areas face chronic underfunding and infrastructural neglect, leading to a deterioration of educational standards.

The incident also spilled over into the Rajasthan Assembly, where the BJP and the Opposition Congress traded allegations. Education Minister Mr. Dilawar later accused the CJP and Congress of attempting to “disrupt education and spoil the atmosphere.” He added: “Turning the schools into political battlegrounds is extremely regrettable. Everyone should remain vigilant against the attempts to tarnish the school environment for selfish interests.” This statement reflects the ongoing political polarization in Rajasthan, where education has become a contentious issue intertwined with party politics.

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties-Rajasthan demanded the immediate arrest of all those accused of attacking the CJP delegation. They also sought an impartial inquiry into the failure of police officials to take preventive action despite receiving prior information about the possibility of an attack. This demand highlights the broader concerns regarding law enforcement's role in political conflicts and the protection of civil rights, particularly in a context where activism aimed at improving public services is met with hostility.
