Nepal-Tibet Floods: Death Toll Reaches 165, Over 300 Indians Missing

New Delhi, India Aug 27, 2026 ALN: At least 165 people have died and thousands, including over 300 Indians, remain missing after flash floods and landslides swept communities along Nepal’s Bhote Koshi River near the Tibet border. Rescue teams continued searching through mud and debris for survivors.

Nepal's disaster agency reported that 823 people remained out of contact on Thursday.

India has sent 10 tonnes of humanitarian aid and essential medicines, while the US announced $500,000 in emergency assistance.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu issued emergency numbers for assistance and information related to Indian nationals affected by the flash floods. In a post on X, it stated that people can contact +977 985 131 6807 or +977 970 910 7500.

The Nepal Tourism Board has issued a toll-free emergency number 1234 or hotline 1144 or tourist police 9851289445 for help.

Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were put on high alert on Wednesday after flash floods in neighboring Nepal caused damage across several districts in the Gandak river basin. Authorities began emergency preparations, including moving people away from vulnerable areas.

The death toll in the massive flash floods in Nepal rose to 165 after three more bodies were recovered from Nawalparasi West on Thursday.

Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama expressed his condolences, stating, "I pray for all those who have lost their lives, and offer my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and to all those affected by this tragedy."

The List of Missing in Nepal-Tibet Flash Floods

More than 1,300 people were reported missing and at least 165 were confirmed dead after flash floods and landslides at the Nepal-Tibet border. Here is a list of the nationalities of tourists who have been determined to be missing:

• India: Over 300 Indians are missing, as reported by Nepal's foreign minister Shishir Khanal.
• China: Authorities stated that 298 Chinese individuals are missing.
• Ukraine: 53 Ukrainian nationals are believed to be missing, including a group of 46 tourists.
• Australia: 34 Australians are reported missing.
• Malaysia: More than 50 Malaysians are unreachable.
• United Kingdom: 12 UK citizens are unaccounted for.
• South Korea: Nine hydropower workers are out of contact.
• Japan: Five Japanese nationals are missing.
• South Africa: Four South Africans are unaccounted for.
• The US: Three US citizens are missing.
• Portugal: A woman and a man are reported missing.
• Netherlands: A Dutch citizen is unaccounted for.
• Italy: Two Italians and their guide are stranded but receiving help.
• New Zealand: Five New Zealanders are unaccounted for.
• Other nationalities: 10 Canadians and two Singaporeans are also missing.

Over 800 Missing After Flash Floods in Nepal

Nepal reported that more than 800 people, including nearly 580 tourists, were missing in the massive flash floods. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) stated that 826 individuals have been out of contact since the flood swept through parts of the Nepal-Tibet border.

Meanwhile, three people were killed, and as many as 588 are reportedly missing in China's Tibet autonomous region.

Indian Envoy on Missing Indians

Nepal floods LIVE: Naveen Srivastava, the Indian ambassador to Nepal, stated that nearly 300 Indians remain missing. "We have not been able to make contact with them, partly because the communication networks are down and there is no electricity," he told NDTV.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed concern over the devastating flash floods in Nepal, stating that the people of Assam stand in solidarity with Nepal.
