The Sensex opened higher on Friday, boosted by IT stocks, while investors await key remarks from the US Federal Reserve Chair at the Jackson Hole Symposium.
Shillong, India Aug 28, 2026 ALN: The benchmark equity indices opened higher on Friday, supported by gains in information technology stocks, while investors remained cautious ahead of US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks at the Jackson Hole Symposium. This annual gathering of central bankers and financial leaders is a significant event in the economic calendar, often providing insights into future monetary policy.
During early trade, the Sensex was trading 193.02 points, or 0.25 per cent, higher at 77,126.61, while the Nifty gained 33.80 points, or 0.14 per cent, to 24,124.65. The positive movement in these indices reflects a general optimism in the market, particularly among investors focused on technology stocks, which have shown resilience and growth potential amid fluctuating economic conditions.
Commenting on the Nifty technical outlook, experts noted that the maximum Put open interest is concentrated at the 24,000 and 23,800 strikes, indicating these are the levels where traders expect buying support to emerge. This suggests that many investors are betting on the Nifty maintaining its position above these levels, which could act as a safety net in case of market volatility.
"On the upside, maximum Call open interest is clustered at 24,200 and 24,300, highlighting the zone where sellers continue to cap advances," as per the expert. This creates a scenario where market participants are closely watching these levels as potential points of resistance, which could limit further gains unless significant buying pressure is generated.
"A decisive break below the prior swing low of 24,025 would confirm a positional trend reversal. On the upside, the recent swing high of 24,378 is likely to act as immediate resistance," another expert added. This technical analysis underscores the importance of these key levels in determining the market's short-term direction, as traders often react to such indicators in their investment strategies.
IT stocks led the gains on the Nifty, with Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and Infosys emerging as the top performers in the index. The IT sector has been a major driver of India's economic growth, contributing significantly to exports and employment. The recent performance of these stocks reflects not only their individual company strategies but also the overall health of the technology sector, which has been buoyed by increased demand for digital services and solutions.
The broader market also opened on a positive note, with the Nifty MidCap index rising 0.03 per cent and the Nifty SmallCap index gaining 0.16 per cent. This indicates a broad-based rally, as smaller companies also participate in the upward momentum, suggesting that investor confidence is not limited to large-cap stocks.
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty IT index advanced more than 1 per cent, outperforming the broader market. The Nifty Metal and Nifty Media indices also traded stronger, reflecting positive sentiment in these sectors. In contrast, the Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Financial Services indices underperformed, which may raise concerns about the financial sector's ability to keep pace with the broader market gains.
Experts said that market participants are closely tracking developments from the Jackson Hole Symposium, particularly the US Federal Reserve’s outlook on interest rates and the broader direction of monetary policy, which could influence global equity markets. The Fed's decisions on interest rates play a crucial role in shaping investor sentiment worldwide, as changes can affect borrowing costs, consumer spending, and ultimately economic growth.
“Brent crude has again surged to above $89 since there are no signs of any diplomatic solutions to reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Total lack of clarity on this issue is weighing on the market," an analyst stated. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital shipping route for oil, and any geopolitical tensions in the region can lead to fluctuations in oil prices, which in turn can impact inflation and economic stability. Rising oil prices may lead to increased costs for consumers and businesses, potentially slowing economic growth.
In summary, while the early trading session shows a positive trend in the Indian equity markets, fueled primarily by gains in the IT sector, the broader implications of global economic policies, particularly those from the US Federal Reserve, and geopolitical tensions surrounding oil prices remain critical factors that investors will need to monitor closely. As the market navigates these challenges, the performance of key indices and sectors will continue to be a focal point for traders and analysts alike.
