Nongthymmai Government LP School Celebrates New Toilet Facility

Shillong, India Aug 27, 2026 ALN: Nongthymmai Government Lower Primary School in Nongthymmai, Umsning, Ri Bhoi district, has recently celebrated the inauguration of a newly constructed toilet facility. This development addresses a long-standing need that has been faced by both students and teachers at the school, which has been operational since its establishment in 1934.

The origins of Nongthymmai Government LP School can be traced back to the efforts of the Presbyterian Church authorities of Nongthymmai. Initially set up through the Khawkham Sub-Committee, the school was taken over by the Government in 1954. With nearly 92 years of history, the school is nearing its centenary milestone. However, it continues to operate from an old Assam-type building, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced infrastructure to meet contemporary educational standards.

Currently, the school is staffed by 11 teachers and caters to more than 153 students ranging from Nursery to Class VIII. It is noteworthy that only two of the teachers are government-paid, while the remaining staff members are supported by the School Managing Committee, which relies heavily on contributions from the local community. This reliance on community support extends to the salaries of teachers responsible for Classes VI to VIII and encompasses various other educational necessities, including classroom supplies and facilities. The Nongthymmai Dorbar Shnong plays a vital role in providing this financial assistance, highlighting the collaborative efforts within the community to sustain the educational needs of the students.

The school is led by Headmistress Veronica Nonglang, who has been instrumental in advocating for better facilities. A significant concern that had been raised by her and the school authorities was the absence of a usable toilet. The previous toilet facility had deteriorated to a point where it was no longer safe for use, causing considerable inconvenience and discomfort for both students and teachers. Despite her efforts to seek assistance from the relevant authorities, no effective solutions had been forthcoming until recently.

The situation changed when the matter was brought to the attention of Dr. David Lyngdoh, Chairman of the Umsning People’s Front (UPF), during a meeting with school representatives. Responding promptly to the urgent request for assistance, Dr. Lyngdoh arranged for the construction of a new toilet facility, demonstrating a commitment to improving the educational environment for the children in the area.

The newly constructed toilet facility is designed to be inclusive, featuring separate toilets for female and male students, as well as a dedicated toilet for teachers.
