A businessman from Dakshina Kannada has reported losing over ₹87 lakh to a woman he met on a matrimony app, who allegedly deceived him into transferring money.

Mangaluru: A businessman from Belthangady in Dakshina Kannada district has alleged that a woman he met through a matrimony app cheated him of more than ₹87 lakh after repeatedly seeking money on various pretexts over several months.

According to the complaint, the businessman came into contact with the accused, identified as Anisha Palanna (35), through a matrimony app in May 2024. The two remained in regular contact over the phone. The use of matrimony apps has become increasingly common in India, where traditional arranged marriages are often supplemented or replaced by digital platforms. These apps provide a space for individuals to connect based on compatibility, preferences, and shared values. However, they also present a new avenue for fraudulent activities, as the anonymity of the internet can lead to deceptive practices.

The complainant alleged that between September 26, 2024, and January 20, 2025, the woman contacted him several times and persuaded him to transfer money, citing different reasons. Trusting her, he transferred funds in multiple instalments to various bank accounts. The reasons for the money transfers varied, which is a common tactic used by scammers to maintain the trust of their victims. These reasons can range from medical emergencies to business investments or personal financial crises, all designed to evoke sympathy and prompt immediate financial assistance.

In all, the complainant claims to have transferred ₹87,22,710. However, he alleged that the woman later became unreachable and failed to return the money, leading him to suspect that he had been cheated. This situation highlights the vulnerabilities that individuals face when engaging with online platforms, particularly in a context where emotional connections can be exploited for financial gain.

Fraudulent activities on matrimony apps are not isolated incidents. There has been a notable increase in reports of scams associated with online matrimonial services, particularly as more people turn to these platforms for companionship and marriage. According to various reports, victims often find themselves in situations where they are manipulated into sending money to individuals they have never met in person. This trend raises questions about the safety measures implemented by these matrimonial services to protect their users.

Based on the complaint, the Belthangady police have registered a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and have launched an investigation. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita is a legal framework that governs various criminal offenses in India, including fraud. The registration of the case indicates a formal acknowledgment of the allegations, and the police are expected to conduct thorough inquiries, which may involve tracking financial transactions, interviewing potential witnesses, and possibly collaborating with cybercrime units to trace the accused.

The implications of this case extend beyond the immediate financial loss experienced by the businessman. It raises critical issues regarding the regulatory environment surrounding online matrimonial services in India. As these platforms grow in popularity, there is a pressing need for more robust verification processes to ensure the authenticity of users. Background checks and identity verification could serve as deterrents against fraudulent activities, providing users with a safer environment to seek companionship.

Moreover, this incident serves as a cautionary tale for individuals engaging with online matrimonial services. Prospective users are advised to exercise caution and perform due diligence before transferring money or sharing personal information. Recognizing the signs of potential scams, such as requests for money from individuals claiming to be in distress, can help mitigate the risk of falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.

In addition to individual responsibility, there is a growing call for greater accountability from the operators of matrimony apps. Stakeholders in the industry are urged to implement stricter measures to protect users from fraud. This could involve enhancing user education about the risks associated with online interactions, providing resources for reporting suspicious behavior, and establishing clearer guidelines for financial transactions between users.

As investigations into this case continue, it is essential for law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant in addressing the broader issue of online fraud. Collaborative efforts between police departments, financial institutions, and technology companies can help develop comprehensive strategies to combat cybercrime. This includes sharing information about emerging scams, improving detection systems for fraudulent transactions, and raising public awareness about the importance of cybersecurity.

The rise of digital platforms for matrimony has transformed the landscape of relationships and marriage in India. With the increasing reliance on technology, the potential for misuse also escalates. Matrimony apps often market themselves as safe spaces for individuals seeking long-term relationships or marriage, yet the lack of stringent verification processes can lead to dire consequences for unsuspecting users. The emotional and financial toll on victims can be significant, often leaving them with feelings of betrayal and loss.

Furthermore, the societal implications of such scams are profound. They not only erode trust in digital platforms but also reflect broader issues of financial literacy and awareness among the general public. Many individuals may not be fully aware of the risks associated with online interactions, particularly in contexts where emotions and personal connections are involved. This underscores the need for educational initiatives aimed at informing users about the potential dangers and encouraging them to adopt safer online practices.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the responsibility also lies with technology developers and app creators to prioritize user safety. Implementing features such as secure payment gateways, user verification protocols, and reporting mechanisms for suspicious activity can significantly enhance the safety of users. Additionally, fostering a culture of transparency and accountability within the industry is crucial for rebuilding trust among users.

In conclusion, the case of the businessman from Dakshina Kannada district underscores the need for heightened awareness and protective measures in the realm of online matrimonial services. As technology continues to evolve, so too do the tactics employed by fraudsters. It is imperative for users to remain informed and cautious, while also advocating for systemic changes that prioritize safety and security in digital interactions. The collective effort of individuals, industry stakeholders, and law enforcement agencies is essential in combating online fraud and fostering a safer environment for all users of matrimonial apps.
