Dabolim and Mopa Airports Experience Significant Decline in Passenger Traffic

Panaji: The international passenger traffic from Dabolim airport has plunged by 69 percent, just as it has dipped by 42 percent at Mopa airport during April-June, thus being among the steepest declines recorded across Indian airports. This significant drop has raised concerns about the future of air travel in Goa, a state that heavily relies on tourism as a key component of its economy.

The decline in passenger traffic at these airports is reflective of broader trends affecting the aviation industry in India. At the national level, the international traffic from India dropped by 10 percent during the first quarter of the financial year, with Indian carriers losing 27 percent of passengers while foreign airlines gained 6 percent. This shift indicates not only a reduction in demand for air travel but also a potential shift in consumer preferences, as travelers may be opting for foreign airlines that are perceived to offer better services or more competitive pricing.

The latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has further informed that the share of international passengers carried by Indian airlines has fallen from 46 percent to 37 percent. This trend could suggest that Indian airlines need to reassess their strategies to regain market share, potentially by improving service quality, expanding their route networks, or adjusting pricing strategies to attract more customers.

Among Indian airlines, Akasa Air recorded a 26 percent increase in international passengers. This growth amidst a general decline highlights Akasa Air's successful market strategies and its ability to capture a segment of the market that is increasingly competitive. In contrast, major players like IndiGo saw a 15 percent decline, while Air India Express and SpiceJet recorded falls of 51 percent and 56 percent respectively. The airport’s passenger satisfaction score also declined from 4.94 out of 5 in January-March to 4.89 during April-June, as per the ASQ survey. Among a total of 16 major airports under the Airport Authority of India surveyed in India, Dabolim airport stood 8th, marginally above the AAI average of 4.88. Despite the decline, it has continued to perform above the global average of 4.38 and the benchmark target of 4.68. This indicates that while there are areas for improvement, Dabolim airport is still regarded as a relatively well-performing airport in terms of passenger satisfaction when compared to other airports both nationally and internationally.
