The BJP criticizes Congress for limiting Vande Mataram's singing, pledging to uphold its significance while launching a nationwide campaign targeting Gen-Z.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recently taken a firm stance against the Congress Working Committee’s decision to reaffirm its 1937 resolution regarding the singing of Vande Mataram. This decision, which limits the performance of the song to its first two stanzas at Congress events, has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, which views it as an attempt to undermine the song's significance in the context of Indian ism and cultural heritage. In response, the BJP has not only condemned this move but has also launched a comprehensive outreach initiative aimed at engaging with the youth of the nation.

On Saturday, BJP president Nitin Nabin convened a meeting with newly-appointed office-bearers, a gathering that also included their predecessors. The meeting was significant in setting the tone for the party's future strategies, particularly in relation to youth engagement. In the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the newly formed team, emphasizing the importance of innovative organizational meetings that foster new ideas and strengthen the party's connection with the public.

During his address, Mr. Modi highlighted the need for the BJP to intensify its outreach to younger voters, a demographic that has become increasingly influential in Indian politics. The Prime Minister's call for a stronger connection with the youth reflects a broader recognition within the party that engaging with this group is crucial for future electoral success.

Focus on Youth

The BJP's focus on the youth is evident in its decision to establish a dedicated team for a nationwide Gen-Z outreach program. This initiative aims to better understand the aspirations, concerns, and issues faced by young people in India. The team is expected to comprise key figures within the party, including Mr. Nabin, general secretaries Smriti Irani and Vinod Tawde, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and Chhattisgarh Minister O.P. Choudhary. By involving prominent leaders, the BJP aims to convey a sense of commitment and seriousness towards addressing youth-related issues.

In addition to the outreach program, another significant meeting was planned to commemorate Prime Minister Modi’s birthday and the 25th anniversary of his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister. This month-long program, scheduled from September 17 to October 17, is expected to further enhance the party's visibility and connection with the electorate.

Resolution on Vande Mataram

The BJP’s resolution regarding Vande Mataram is a clear indication of its intent to position itself as a defender of values and cultural symbols. The party's 10-point resolution firmly rejects any attempts to subordinate the song to what it describes as communal pressures, political appeasement, or vote-bank politics. By asserting that the Congress Working Committee’s 1937 decision cannot override constitutional institutions or laws, the BJP seeks to reinforce its narrative of ism.

Furthermore, the BJP emphasizes the constitutional and statutory status of Vande Mataram, as established by the Constituent Assembly’s pronouncement in 1950 and reinforced by the 2026 amendment known as the Prevention of Insults to Honour (Amendment) Act. This amendment extends statutory protection to the song, placing it on par with the anthem in terms of legal respect and significance.

Nationwide Campaign

As part of its campaign, the BJP plans to mobilize its workers nationwide to educate the public, particularly the youth, about the history, six-stanza composition, and significance of Vande Mataram. The party aims to frame the song not just as a historical artifact but as a living symbol of pride and unity. The BJP's statement reflects its commitment to ensuring that the legacy of Vande Mataram is not diluted by contemporary political calculations, asserting that the same song that resonated during India's struggle for independence in 1947 will continue to inspire a vision for a 'Developed India @ 2047' under Prime Minister Modi's leadership.

At a recent press conference, BJP MP Sambit Patra brought attention to a complaint filed with the police regarding alleged disturbances during the rendition of Vande Mataram at the All India Congress Committee headquarters on August 15. This incident has been framed by the BJP as part of a broader narrative of defending symbols against perceived disrespect. Mr. Patra pointed out that the Prevention of Insults to Honour (Amendment) Act prescribes penalties for such actions, indicating that the party intends to pursue legal avenues to uphold the sanctity of the song.

In addition to the discussions surrounding Vande Mataram, BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde provided insights into the first meeting of the office-bearers and the associated workshop for the month-long 'Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.' This initiative will focus on service-oriented activities, including honoring Anganwadi workers and organizing 'Matri Samvad' events to foster community dialogue. The 'Seva Setu' program will facilitate block-level camps to help eligible beneficiaries enroll in government welfare schemes, thereby enhancing the party's outreach at the grassroots level.

Moreover, the BJP plans to encourage youth participation in service activities, positioning them as active contributors to the community. An Innovation Challenge will be introduced to solicit local solutions to pressing problems, fostering a sense of ownership and initiative among young people. Workshops at the state, district, and block levels will ensure that the program reaches the grassroots, thereby amplifying the BJP's presence and influence across diverse segments of society.

In conclusion, the BJP's recent actions concerning Vande Mataram and its youth outreach initiative reflect a strategic approach to engage with younger voters while reinforcing its narrative of ism. As the political landscape in India continues to evolve, the party's efforts to connect with the youth and uphold symbols will play a crucial role in shaping its future electoral strategies and public perception.
