Chinese PLA Allegedly Intrudes 35 km into Taksing Circle

Itanagar, India Aug 28, 2026 ALN: ITANAGAR, Aug 27: The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) personnel have allegedly entered areas within approximately 35 km of Taksing circle in Upper Subansiri district, according to Larji Rigia, president of the Tagin Cultural Society (TCS). This claim follows a recent inspection of the area by a TCS delegation, which aimed to assess border security and engage with local villagers.

The delegation, which visited the remote frontier region on August 20, reported that residents indicated an increasing Chinese presence, which has encroached upon traditional hunting grounds. Furthermore, Rigia noted that the PLA has established permanent security and army camps in strategically significant areas, raising alarms about the implications for local communities.

Despite these claims, officials from the Indian Army and state government, including Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Home Minister Mama Natung, have dismissed reports of significant Chinese incursions in the Taksing sector as unverified and baseless. Rigia emphasized the need for immediate action, urging the Government of India (GoI) and the Government of (GoAP) to prevent further PLA advancements.

“The Indian Army has reached there, and we urge the GoI and GoAP to not allow the PLA to proceed further,” Rigia stated. He highlighted the logistical challenges faced by the Indian Army in the region, noting that Taksing is over 200 km from the district headquarters in Daporijo. The road conditions, particularly from Taliah to Taksing, are narrow and single-lane, necessitating urgent upgrades to facilitate better access for both civilians and military personnel.

Moreover, Rigia advocated for the proposed Frontier Highway to be realigned to connect remote border areas like Taksing, which have been recurrent targets of Chinese encroachment.

The TCS delegation included vice president Tarak Nacho, convenor B Dokum, finance secretary N M Hina, and other senior members. They were joined by Chatung Mra, president of the Kojum Welfare Society (KWS).

The Nah Welfare Society (NWS), a local NGO based in Taksing, previously submitted a memorandum to the Upper Subansiri District Commissioner detailing the roads, bridges, and military installations established by the PLA in areas traditionally utilized by local communities for grazing and hunting. NWS president Chatung Mra expressed deep concern over what they described as the gradual occupation of ancestral lands by the Chinese military.

In response to the confusion surrounding the situation, Chatung clarified that Nah is a sub-clan of Tagin, similar to Mra, Tai, Nilo, and Choker, and emphasized that reports of PLA encroachment are accurate.

If verified, these allegations could have significant implications for border security in one of the most sensitive sectors along the India-China frontier. As of now, there has been no official response from the district administration or the Ministry of Defence regarding these claims.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju was quick to reject the claims, stating that the Indo-China border remains undemarcated in many areas due to challenging terrain, which complicates the situation along the 1,129 km stretch of the total 3,488 km Indo-China border.

Former MLA and National People’s Party (NPP) national general secretary Paknga Bage expressed serious concern over the NWS representation to the District Commissioner regarding alleged Chinese encroachment. He criticized the Chief Minister for dismissing the claims without thorough investigation and called for the establishment of a high-level committee to ascertain the ground realities.

“This is a very sensitive matter that should be addressed at the highest level of the GoI, potentially through negotiation or decisive action to reclaim the land,” Bage stated.

Social activist and NWS advisor Nongbi Chader urged the public to remain calm and refrain from sharing any videos related to the situation in the area.
