The Auk Mini 2 enhances its predecessor with improved lighting, a sleek design, and new color options, making indoor gardening more appealing.
Washington DC, United States Aug 15, 2026 ALN: When Auk’s original Mini 1 herb garden hit the market in 2024, it touched on something that many tabletop gardens had until that point failed to consider: If you’re going to give up that much counter or table space, you don’t want it to be for something ugly. The aesthetic appeal of indoor gardening solutions is crucial for many consumers, as these products often occupy valuable real estate in homes where design and style are prioritized.
Aerogardens and similar models, while functional, often lack the visual appeal that many consumers desire. They tend to resemble utilitarian devices rather than stylish home decor. The Auk Mini filled that marketplace gap with its pairing of sleek Scandinavian design and utility, transforming the run-of-the-mill herb-growing operation into a conversation piece. This emphasis on design reflects a broader trend in home gardening where consumers are increasingly looking for products that not only serve a practical purpose but also enhance the overall aesthetic of their living spaces.
When I reviewed the original Auk Mini last fall, I loved that it allowed users to plant their own seeds in widely available coco coir, an alternative to peat moss made from coconut husks. This choice of growing medium resonates with environmentally conscious consumers, as coco coir is a renewable resource and more sustainable than traditional peat moss. The Mini 1’s design also eliminated the need for proprietary pods, subscriptions, or complex apps, making it accessible to a wider range of users. This simplicity was a significant selling point, as many potential indoor gardeners are deterred by overly complicated systems.
When I started testing the brand-new Auk 2 earlier this summer, I wondered what new features could possibly justify a new model. Turns out, there was more room for improvement than I thought. The evolution of the Auk Mini series represents a commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to consumer feedback, which is essential in a competitive market.
For the uninitiated, Auk (pronounced “owk”) is a Norwegian company that released its first garden, the Auk 1, in 2021. Essentially a larger version of the Mini 1, the Auk 1 received mixed reviews online for its tower water reservoir and inconsistent light and watering cycles. Such inconsistencies can significantly affect plant growth and user satisfaction. In fact, a former director tested it and became so frustrated that he threw it in the trash. This anecdote highlights the importance of reliability in indoor gardening systems, as users expect their investments to yield healthy plants without excessive hassle.
The Mini 1 was a simplified version of the Auk system, with four oval pots set over a 3-liter reservoir. Users could grow the included herb seeds or anything else they wanted in the pots using coco coir. It was simple, stylish, and effective, providing a user-friendly introduction to indoor gardening. The success of the Mini 1 laid the groundwork for the Mini 2, which sought to refine and enhance the user experience.
The Auk Mini 2 features a handful of updates, but perhaps the most visible is that it comes in new color variations, rather than just black and white. The introduction of additional color options allows consumers to better match the garden to their home decor, making it a more attractive addition to any living space. There are still the oak and walnut wood bottoms, but Mini 2 offers beech and ash instead of the Mini 1's cork. Espresso, sage, and terra-cotta colored tops now join the menu of offerings, appealing to a wider range of aesthetic preferences.
The Mini 2 also sports bigger plant pots and a 25 percent larger water capacity, despite its overall footprint being 12 percent smaller than the original. This design optimization demonstrates a thoughtful approach to space management, allowing users to grow more plants in a compact area. The larger pots can accommodate more soil and roots, which can lead to healthier plants and potentially higher yields.
There is now also—and I admittedly had mixed feelings about this—an app. Using the Auk Connect app isn’t mandatory; you can still control the light schedule manually using a button on the light bar, as with the Auk Mini 1. The introduction of an app reflects a growing trend in smart home technology, where consumers expect connectivity and control from their devices. The app doesn’t add much, but to its credit, it’s easy to set up. You don’t even need to make an account. Just download it; open it; and choose your garden, which the app should already recognize. You’ll access a page where you can turn the light on or off, dim it, set a time schedule, or swap grow mode from “Herbs & Salads” to “Fruits & Veggies.” This flexibility allows users to tailor their gardening experience to their specific needs and preferences.
Though the stock dowels for the light bar on the Mini 2 are, as on the Mini 1, too low at a maximum of 15 inches to easily accommodate taller fruiting plants like peppers, Auk now offers a $39 Chili & Tomato Kit with longer dowels and a tray with larger pots (two instead of three). This accessory kit provides an option for users who want to expand their gardening capabilities, allowing them to grow a wider variety of plants. I have not tried it, but I’d be surprised if it didn’t result in substantially increased yield. The availability of such kits indicates that Auk is aware of the diverse needs of indoor gardeners and is willing to provide solutions to enhance their experience.
In summary, the Auk Mini 2 has improved upon its predecessor in several key areas, making it a worthy investment for anyone looking to enhance their indoor gardening experience. As more people turn to indoor gardening for both aesthetic and practical reasons, products like the Auk Mini 2 are likely to play an increasingly important role in homes. The combination of style, functionality, and user-friendly features positions the Mini 2 as a strong contender in the growing market of indoor gardening solutions. With the rising interest in sustainable living and home-grown produce, the Auk Mini 2 not only addresses the needs of modern consumers but also contributes to a larger movement towards self-sufficiency and environmental awareness.
