A Reddit post highlights the struggles average men face in Singapore's dating scene, prompting discussions about expectations and preferences among women.

A local Reddit user sparked a lively discussion about Singapore’s dating scene, asserting that being an average man in the city is akin to a "dating death sentence." Her post, shared on August 17, has resonated with many Singaporeans, leading to a flood of responses.

The author, who identifies as being happily in a relationship, expressed her concerns after observing her female friends using the dating app Hinge. She noted that many of them dismissed potential matches based on superficial criteria, leading her to question how an average male could compete in such an environment.

Importantly, she clarified that her comments were not aimed at men who are unattractive or unsuccessful, but rather at those who are average in appearance, career, and lifestyle. She recounted hearing her friends frequently remark that the men they swiped past were too short, had mundane jobs, or simply lacked charisma. This reflects a broader trend in modern dating culture, where first impressions are heavily influenced by visual and social status indicators.

One particularly striking anecdote involved a colleague who ghosted a match after he initiated their conversation with a simple "hello." This colleague also admitted to checking her match's LinkedIn profile, and if she deemed his job too average, she would reject him. This behavior highlights a phenomenon known as "resume dating," where individuals are judged not just on their personality or chemistry but also on their professional achievements and online presence.

“Imagine thinking you’re doing okay on Hinge, only to get eliminated in the background because you said hello and your LinkedIn wasn’t impressive enough,” she remarked. She argued that her friends' preferences for tall, attractive, fit, and successful men create a daunting standard for any man who does not meet these criteria. This raises questions about the impact of societal pressures on dating norms, particularly in a competitive city like Singapore, where success is often equated with attractiveness.

Ironically, she pointed out that many of these women are the same ones who lament the scarcity of good men. This contradiction suggests a disconnect between what individuals claim to seek in partners and the actual behaviors they exhibit in dating scenarios. She suggested that men who do not find partners by the time they leave school may be facing an uphill battle in the dating world, as the dating pool becomes narrower and expectations become more stringent with age.

“At this point, does an average man basically have to become above average just to get an average dating experience? Guys in SG: is dating really this brutal, or does it just look that way from the female side?” she questioned. This inquiry taps into a larger conversation about gender dynamics in dating, where men often feel pressured to meet certain standards to gain acceptance and interest from potential partners.

Responses from other users echoed her sentiments. One commenter noted, “Yes, it is this brutal if you are a male. You have better luck meeting someone at a hobby or volunteer or religious setting.” This suggests that alternative avenues for meeting potential partners may provide a more authentic experience, as they allow individuals to connect over shared interests rather than superficial traits.

Another user, who uses Hinge and Bumble, agreed that while women have their preferences, the combination of traits they seek often describes someone who is above average. However, he emphasized that being an average guy does not doom one to failure in dating. "You just have to put more effort into your profile and how you communicate," he advised. This highlights the importance of self-presentation and communication skills in navigating the dating landscape, suggesting that average men can still find success by leveraging their strengths and improving their profiles.

Others shared their experiences, with one average man stating that while ghosting can be emotionally taxing, he has learned not to take it personally. He expressed appreciation for the original poster's recognition of the challenges faced by men in the dating scene. “As a single average guy, I got tired of judging and being judged. It’s been almost a decade since my realization,” he concluded, highlighting the emotional toll of navigating the dating landscape. His perspective underscores the psychological impact of dating culture, where rejection and comparison can lead to feelings of inadequacy.

This discussion sheds light on the complexities of modern dating in Singapore, where societal expectations and personal preferences can create significant barriers for average men seeking meaningful connections. The interplay between social media, dating apps, and traditional dating norms is reshaping how individuals connect, often complicating the pursuit of genuine relationships. As the conversation continues, it may encourage a reevaluation of dating standards and a more inclusive approach to attraction that values personality and compatibility over superficial traits.
