Friendly home robots have long been a staple of science fiction, envisioned as docile, helpful machines capable of performing a variety of household tasks. These tasks range from doing laundry and taking out the trash to preparing meals and cleaning up afterward. However, for robots to fulfill these roles effectively, they will require a sophisticated means of manipulation—essentially, hands that can perform intricate tasks in a human-like manner.

1X, a Norwegian-American robotics company, has recently unveiled details about the advanced five-fingered hands attached to its soft, friendly robot companion, Neo. This development marks a significant step forward in the field of robotics, particularly in the realm of humanoid machines designed for domestic use.

The hands of Neo are crafted with advanced actuators that are engineered to mimic the movement of tendons in human arms, allowing for a remarkable degree of dexterity. According to 1X, Neo's hands boast 25 degrees of freedom of movement, which is only slightly less than the 27 degrees found in human hands. This capability enables Neo to perform a wide range of motions, making it adept at gripping objects of various shapes and sizes. Furthermore, the robot is equipped with cameras and artificial intelligence that help it understand the broader context of its environment, allowing it to identify and grasp items effectively.

One of the standout features of Neo's hands is their ability to detect when an object is slipping from its grip, a crucial safety feature that enhances its usability in a home setting. The fingers can also move at impressive speeds and hyperextend in ways that human fingers cannot, showcasing the innovative engineering behind this robot. Additionally, Neo's hands have an IP68 waterproof rating, which means that the robot can even wash its own hands, a whimsical yet practical feature that underscores its design for everyday use.

Jonathan Terfurth, the director of actuators and hands at 1X, emphasizes that the range of motion in Neo's hands has been carefully calibrated to align closely with human capabilities. He notes that the robot's dexterity may even surpass that of a human in certain situations, enabling it to perform tasks such as opening doors, lifting heavy objects, and autonomously plugging itself in when its battery is low. This level of functionality could significantly enhance the robot's ability to integrate into daily life.

“You want to be able to operate with a human who has never worked or interfaced with a robot, and you still want it to be safe and compliant and soft,” Terfurth explains. “Range of motion can be a bit extreme, but we try to be very close to what humans can do so that we can live in the world.”

This development is part of a broader trend in robotics, akin to the advancements seen with AI technologies like ChatGPT, where robots have evolved from clunky, limited machines into sophisticated entities capable of handling delicate tasks. The shift towards more dexterous and intelligent robots represents a growing recognition of the potential for automation to alleviate mundane chores and improve efficiency in both home and office environments.

Traditionally, the humanoid robot market has been characterized by bulky, intimidating machines reminiscent of science fiction villains, often designed for military or industrial applications. In contrast, 1X is taking a more approachable approach with its Neo robot, which features a soft, supple design wrapped in a 3D lattice shell. This design philosophy is inspired by friendly robotic characters, such as Baymax from Disney's Big Hero 6. For consumers interested in early access to Neo, pricing is set at $20,000 for a one-time purchase or $500 per month for a rental option, with priority delivery slated for 2026.

“We love this idea that a robot can be this peaceful and fun and goofy safe presence in a life,” says Dar Sleeper, 1X’s vice president of product and design. “Something that feels comfortable to be around, something that's soft from the inside to the outside. If you want something to fit into your life, it can't feel like it's from a whole different universe.” This sentiment reflects a growing desire among consumers for technology that is not only functional but also emotionally resonant and visually appealing.

Judgment Day

While 1X envisions a future of full automation for Neo, the robot currently operates in a partially teleoperated mode. As noted in a Wall Street Journal video, this means that human operators can take control of Neo remotely, utilizing a camera to view its surroundings. This feature, referred to as Expert Mode, is designed for more complex tasks that may require human intervention. It also raises important questions about privacy and security, as having a robot in the home that can be accessed remotely introduces potential vulnerabilities.

The marketing for Neo has sparked some debate, particularly regarding its portrayal in promotional materials. The videos highlight the robot's dexterity in a somewhat sensual manner, featuring smooth jazz music and warm lighting as Neo interacts with various objects—curling around a wine glass, turning off a light, unzipping a jacket, and gently touching grapes. While 1X representatives have clarified that they do not view this marketing approach as flirtatious, it nonetheless raises concerns about the implications of a robot that can observe and interact with intimate aspects of human life.

Notably, 1X assures potential customers that human operators can only access their homes when specifically requested, and that robot movements can be restricted. Sensitive information, such as faces, can also be blurred in the video feed. Users have the ability to monitor what the robot is capturing through a mobile app, and a ring light around Neo’s ear provides a visual indicator when a person is connected. Importantly, users can terminate the connection at any time, which is a critical feature in maintaining user control over the robot's capabilities.

However, the company has not yet addressed how it plans to safeguard against potential bad actors or hackers who might seek to exploit these remote access features. The integration of teleoperation raises significant ethical and security concerns, particularly in an age where privacy is increasingly at risk.

Another area of uncertainty lies in the actual performance of Neo's actuators and hand movements. When questioned about whether the promotional videos were created using machine automation or human control, a 1X representative indicated that “some of the videos are machine-articulated while some are operated to show the upper limit of the hardware capabilities.” This ambiguity highlights the need for transparency in the marketing of robotics, as potential users must understand the actual capabilities and limitations of the technology they are considering.

In a demonstration during a Zoom call with Terfurth and Sleeper, a fully automated Neo robot was present. Sleeper prompted the robot to showcase its finger speed, and Neo began by raising and lowering one finger at a slow pace. Gradually, it increased its speed until the fingers blurred together on the screen, moving so rapidly that it was difficult to discern individual motions. This impressive display of dexterity culminated in a peace sign, illustrating the potential for Neo to engage in playful interactions with users.

The advances represented by the Neo robot illustrate a significant leap forward in the field of robotics, particularly in the context of home automation. As technology continues to evolve, the implications of integrating such robots into daily life will be profound, raising questions about the nature of human-robot interaction, privacy, and the future of work.
