Nagaland Proposes Establishment of New Greenfield AIIMS in Nagaki City

Paiwang Konyak on Saturday announced that the state government has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, seeking approval for the establishment of a new Greenfield AIIMS at Nagaki City in Chümoukedima district.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is a group of autonomous public medical colleges in India, known for their high standards in education, research, and patient care. The establishment of new AIIMS institutions across the country has been a significant part of the Indian government's efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and accessibility, particularly in underserved regions. The proposed AIIMS in Nagaki City is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the healthcare needs of the population in Nagaland and surrounding areas.

Addressing the 80th Independence Day celebration at Tseminyu, Konyak said the proposed premier medical institution would be established on approximately 200 acres of land at Nagaki City. The choice of Nagaki City for this development is noteworthy, as it is strategically located in the Chümoukedima district, which has been emerging as a hub for various developmental projects in Nagaland. This new facility aims to not only provide advanced medical education and training but also to enhance the quality of healthcare services available to the local population.

The development of the AIIMS is expected to have far-reaching implications for healthcare in Nagaland. The focus on a TB-Free Nagaland aligns with national objectives and reflects an understanding of the health issues that disproportionately affect certain regions.

In collaboration with the Department of Rural Development, 214 villages across the state were declared TB-Free on the occasion of World TB Day this year, he said. This achievement is indicative of the concerted efforts made by the state government and local communities to address TB through awareness campaigns, early detection, and treatment initiatives. The declaration of these villages as TB-Free not only serves as a milestone but also as a motivational factor for other regions to intensify their efforts in combating the disease.

Konyak also highlighted the government’s efforts towards achieving Universal Health Coverage and ensuring 100 percent Ayushman card coverage among eligible citizens. The Ayushman Bharat scheme, launched by the Government of India, aims to provide health insurance coverage to economically vulnerable populations, ensuring access to necessary healthcare services without financial hardship. The commitment to achieving complete Ayushman card coverage reflects the government's dedication to improving health equity and access in Nagaland.

As part of this initiative, the Department of Health and Family Welfare launched the 100-Day Ayushman Student Coverage Mission across all districts in May 2026, he said. This mission is designed to ensure that students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, are included in the health insurance scheme, thereby safeguarding their health and well-being. The proactive approach of the state government in promoting health insurance among students is a commendable step towards building a healthier future generation.

Earlier, upon his arrival at the venue, Konyak hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya Salute. Two contingents — the 4th Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) and ex-servicemen from Tseminyu — participated in the parade. The Independence Day celebration serves not only as a commemoration of India's freedom but also as an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the armed forces and the sacrifices made for the nation. The participation of ex-servicemen highlights the importance of honoring those who have served in the military and their continued role in society.

The minister also presented district commendation awards to three recipients and inaugurated an exhibition stall as part of the Independence Day programme.
