Governor and Chief Minister Join PM Modi's Anti-Drug Campaign in

Itanagar, India Aug 3, 2026 ALN: Governor Lt Gen K.T. Parnaik (Retd.) and Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Sunday joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s virtual launch of the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, reaffirming the state’s commitment to intensify the fight against substance abuse through community participation, youth engagement and strict law enforcement.

The Governor participated in the nationwide virtual interaction from Lok Bhavan, Itanagar, while the Chief Minister joined the programme from Tawang.

Launching the 100-week nationwide Jan Bhagidari campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed more than one crore young people from over 10,000 locations across the country, including educational institutions and youth centres. He urged the youth to remain mentally and physically fit by staying away from drugs, stressing that substance abuse may provide a temporary “high” but ultimately destroys careers, families and lives. He called upon young people to dedicate themselves to building a healthy and developed India under the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.

Following the virtual programme, Governor Parnaik called for a sustained, people-centric campaign against drug abuse in . He proposed organizing ‘Nasha Mukt Street Shows’ every Sunday for the next 100 days across the state to create widespread awareness and mobilize communities, particularly the youth, against the menace of drugs.

Emphasizing grassroots participation, the Governor advocated a ‘Detect-Counsel-Prevent-Skill’ approach, urging Gaon Burahs, community elders and Panchayat leaders to identify vulnerable youth, counsel affected families and help prevent substance abuse in villages. He also suggested involving Self Help Groups at the Circle level in rehabilitation and recovery initiatives and recommended appointing recovered youth as Anti-Drugs Ambassadors (ADA) to inspire others towards a drug-free life.

Highlighting the importance of constructive engagement, the Governor stressed skill development, sports and youth activities as effective tools to prevent drug addiction. Recalling the recently launched Rupa Football League–Independence Cup Football Tournament under the theme “Say No to Drugs, Yes to Football,” he said sports can play a vital role in steering young people away from substance abuse. He also called for the use of technology and intelligence-based surveillance to identify drug trafficking routes and networks, while advocating strict action against offenders under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other relevant laws.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu described the campaign as a people’s movement against drugs and urged the youth of to become ambassadors of the initiative.

In a social media message, Khandu said India, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, has transformed the fight against substance abuse into a true Jan Bhagidari movement. “I urge every youth in to become an ambassador of this movement and encourage their families, friends and communities to choose a healthy, disciplined and drug-free life,” he said.

The campaign, spearheaded by the Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) platform under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, will continue for the next 100 weeks with weekly Sunday activities, including sports events, walkathons, cultural programmes and community awareness campaigns across the country to sustain the momentum against drug addiction.

At East Siang: Women Against Social Evils (WASE), East Siang, on Sunday virtually participated in the launch of the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing the nationwide programme, the Prime Minister said a Viksit Bharat requires healthy, confident and drug-free youth. He urged young people to take a pledge against substance abuse and actively participate in the 100-week nationwide awareness campaign to build a drug-free India.

WASE East reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the campaign by spreading awareness against substance abuse and encouraging community participation across the district.

Meanwhile, University (APU), Pasighat, on Sunday observed Nasha Mukt Bharat with a special programme on campus, reaffirming its commitment to promoting a drug-free and tobacco-free environment.

Welcoming the gathering, Assistant Registrar (Academics) Likha Rinchin said educational institutions have a vital role in creating awareness against substance abuse and called for collective efforts by the administration, faculty, students and the community to keep campuses free from drugs.

Dean of Academic Affairs Prof. Jena urged teachers to actively guide students against substance abuse and stressed the importance of self-discipline and awareness in building a healthy society.

Chairperson of the Anti-Tobacco Cell Ngurang Mana administered the Nasha Mukt Bharat pledge and reiterated that APU is a tobacco-free campus, warning that violations of the university’s anti-tobacco and anti-drug policies would invite strict action. Dr. Yab Rajiv Camdir encouraged students to focus on academics, sports and healthy lifestyles instead of harmful addictions.

The participants later watched the live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching the nationwide ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, a 100-week campaign aimed at mobilising youth and communities against substance abuse.

At Tirap: Tirap district on Sunday joined the nationwide ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ with a foot march and awareness programme organised by the district administration in collaboration with the 36 Battalion CRPF, Care Me Home Sudhar Ghar, New Light Foundation Rehabilitation Centre and My Bharat volunteers.

The rally, held from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office to Khonsa Bazaar Taxi Stand, featured awareness sessions, testimonials by rehabilitated individuals, cultural performances and the administration of the anti-drug pledge.

Launching the programme, Deputy Commissioner Badonlum Tawsik urged the youth to stay away from all forms of substance abuse and focus on education, discipline and nation-building. He called upon students and the community to spread awareness about the harmful effects of drugs and work collectively towards making Tirap drug-free.

ADC (HQ) Namneet Singh thanked all participating organisations, security forces, volunteers and the public for supporting the campaign.

Later, officials, students and youth watched the live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching the nationwide campaign.

Meanwhile, at Deomali, Environment & Forests Minister Wangki Lowang launched the campaign at the ADC headquarters and administered the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva Viksit Bharat’ pledge in the presence of administrative officials, public representatives, students, police personnel and members of rehabilitation centres, reaffirming the collective commitment to a drug-free society.

At Yingkiong: The Upper Siang district administration on Sunday joined the nationwide launch of the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat’ campaign at Government Higher Secondary School, Yingkiong, where participants watched Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s live address.

Deputy Commissioner Talo Jerang, along with SP Token Saring, Heads of Departments, teachers and students from various schools, reaffirmed their commitment to building a drug-free society.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner said the campaign aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 and stressed that healthy, responsible and drug-free youth are essential for national development. He urged schools to regularly conduct awareness programmes on substance abuse and called for periodic drug testing of teachers and students in coordination with the Health Department.

Principal Lutni Perme, Padu Movement Against Drug Addiction (PMADA) Dr. Jayanta Perme, SP Saring, and Medical Superintendent Dr. Karo Teng also spoke on the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of awareness, rehabilitation and prevention. Dr. Teng administered the anti-drug pledge and briefed participants about services available at the District Drug De-addiction Centre.

The programme concluded with participants taking a collective pledge to work towards a drug-free Upper Siang.

At Aalo: MY Bharat, West Siang, under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, organised the district-level ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ at Ramakrishna Mission School, Aalo, in collaboration with Ramakrishna Mission.

The programme featured the live virtual address of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who called upon the youth to actively participate in the nationwide movement against substance abuse and contribute towards the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.

Vice Chancellor of North East Frontier Technical University Tejum Padu, the chief guest, and Principal of Ramakrishna Mission School Swami Swayamprabhananda highlighted the importance of a healthy, disciplined and drug-free lifestyle and the role of youth in nation-building.

Students, NSS volunteers, faculty members and youth participants took the Nasha Mukti Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to remain free from substance abuse and spread awareness in their communities.

MY Bharat, West Siang, thanked Ramakrishna Mission, volunteers and participants for their support and reiterated its commitment to continuing youth-led anti-drug awareness initiatives across the district.
