Singapore, Singapore Aug 29, 2026 ALN: An Indonesian lawmaker has called on Singapore and Malaysia to assist in combating the haze caused by fires in Indonesia, which threatens to spread due to prevailing winds. Marwan Dasopang, Chairman of Indonesia’s House of Representatives Commission VIII, made this appeal on August 21, urging neighboring countries to take proactive measures rather than merely voicing complaints.
Dasopang highlighted that both Singaporeans and Malaysians have interests in oil palm plantations within Indonesia, which are often linked to the fires contributing to the haze. He emphasized the need for regional cooperation in fire prevention and management, stating, “Malaysia and Singapore also have plantations in Indonesia. They should not just protest, but also take part in prevention efforts.”
He acknowledged the complexity of controlling fires across Indonesia’s vast territory, particularly in Kalimantan, where many of the fires are concentrated. This region, known for its dense forests and peatlands, is particularly vulnerable to fire outbreaks, especially during the dry season. Dasopang pointed out that individuals and companies from both countries should recognize their roles in the ongoing issue.
“From a state-to-state perspective, we can apologize and ask for help, but in terms of activities on the ground, they also have a role there,” he stated. July alone saw more than 94,000 hectares consumed by flames.
