Zoological Survey of India Launches Roadmap for Himalayan Wild Pollinator Conservation

The Zoological Survey of India has initiated a comprehensive survey to protect Himalayan wild pollinators, focusing on bumblebees and their ecological roles.

ITANAGAR, 2 Aug: In a major step towards safeguarding high-altitude biodiversity, the Desert Regional Centre (DRC) of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Jodhpur, has established a comprehensive field survey roadmap. This initiative is particularly significant given the increasing pressures faced by Himalayan ecosystems due to climate change, habitat loss, and human activities.

The strategic initiative forms the cornerstone of the high-priority research project, ‘Assessing ecosystems for the conservation and management of Himalayan wild pollinators – Action for long-term monitoring assessments of Himalayan bumblebees towards biodiversity conservation’. This project aims to create a framework for understanding and preserving the critical roles that wild pollinators, especially bumblebees, play in these delicate ecosystems. Bumblebees are vital for the pollination of many plants, including those that are economically important, and their decline could have far-reaching effects on both biodiversity and agriculture.

Sponsored and funded by the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS), the project focuses on evaluating the distribution, status, and critical ecological roles of wild pollinators. The Himalayan region, known for its unique biodiversity, is home to a variety of bumblebee species, each adapted to the specific conditions of high-altitude environments. The project's goal is to establish permanent, long-term monitoring networks across fragile Himalayan ecosystems until 2029, allowing for ongoing assessment and adaptation of conservation strategies.

Over an intensive weeklong operation, the ZSI field team engaged in close strategic consultations with local divisional forest officers to coordinate logistics and align conservation goals. These collaborations are crucial as they ensure that the conservation efforts are grounded in local knowledge and practices, which can significantly enhance the effectiveness of the project. As a result of these discussions, the team successfully identified and mapped out survey locations across more than 10 key sites spanning six districts. This careful planning is essential for the systematic study of bumblebee populations and their habitats, which will inform future conservation actions.

The field expedition was led on-site by research associate Dr Muzafar Riyaz, accompanied by research associate Purnima Pathak, junior project fellow Aimen Rafiq, and project associate Habung Elsa. The diverse expertise of the team members allows for a comprehensive approach to the research, integrating ecological, biological, and conservation perspectives. The involvement of multiple researchers also facilitates a collaborative environment, fostering the sharing of ideas and methodologies that can enhance the project's outcomes.

The entire project operates under the expert scientific guidance and mentorship of principal investigator Dr Rifat H Raina, Scientist-E at DRC, ZSI Jodhpur. Dr Raina’s leadership is pivotal, as his extensive experience in biodiversity conservation and ecological research provides a solid foundation for the project. His role includes overseeing the scientific integrity of the research and ensuring that the findings contribute to the broader goals of biodiversity conservation in the Himalayas.

Parallel to the technical mapping efforts, the team spearheaded dedicated capacity-building and outreach programmes to foster local stewardship. Engaging local communities is essential for the success of conservation initiatives, as it encourages sustainable practices and increases awareness of the importance of biodiversity. A specialised workshop was organised at the divisional forest office in Ziro to sensitise forest personnel to sustainable forest management and pollinator-friendly ecosystem practices. This training equips local forest officers with the knowledge and tools they need to protect and manage their natural resources effectively.

Additionally, an educational awareness programme was hosted at Danyi Kunya Higher Secondary School in Ziro, Lower Subansiri district. During this event, Dr Riyaz interacted with Class 11 and 12 biology students, introducing them to wild pollinator conservation and the ecological significance of bumblebees in maintaining Himalayan flora. Engaging young students not only raises awareness about biodiversity but also inspires the next generation to take an active role in conservation efforts. Education is a powerful tool in fostering a conservation ethic within communities, ensuring that future generations understand the importance of preserving their natural heritage.

The implications of this project extend beyond immediate conservation efforts. By establishing a long-term monitoring framework, the ZSI aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge regarding the impacts of environmental changes on pollinator populations. Such data is crucial for informing policy decisions and conservation strategies at both local and national levels. Furthermore, the focus on bumblebees highlights the interconnectedness of species within ecosystems and the need for holistic approaches to conservation that consider the entire ecological community.

As the project progresses, the ZSI will likely face challenges, including the need for ongoing funding, the integration of scientific research with local practices, and the necessity of adapting strategies in response to changing environmental conditions.
